Years ago in the old preban days I had a Colt full length AR. It had a bayonet that fit on the barrel so the handle was around the flash hider. I am currently starting to build an AR and am curious if you can help. I want to build an upper that I can use a bayonet on. All the barrels I see have the lug way down the barrel, like a M4. Some of the 20 inch ones seem to have the lug way to close to the flash hider.

My question is, What length barrel do I need to put a bayonet on so it fits right, with the hole on the handle over the flash hider? Also who makes it?

If you could provide a link to it as well I would appreciate it.

Thanks Barry

Wow!  I'll try to help anyone that's been hanging around this place over 4 1/2 without saying a word.

Any standard 20" (m16Ax) or 14.5" (M4) will have the correct length from the bayonet lug to the standard A2 Flash suppressor to fit most bayonets.

After a quick google search, I found that M4bayonets.com seems to have a fair amount of info.

The basics as I understand are that are designed for a bayonet:
a 14.5" SBR with carbine length gas
a 16" with midlength gas
and then a 20" with rifle length gas.

Most companies make these configurations.

For a carbine 14.5" barrel is the right length for the bayonet attachment you seek. You'll need an extended flash suppressor like Sabre Defense's extended A2, or the Phantom series* permanently attached. These will bring the OAL to 16" to maintain legality.

This is a 14.7" with a permanently attached standard A2 flash suppressor. I installed a small spacer between the handle & butt-cap on a UAE M7 bayonet to make it work for me.

Not the right length, it's beeen tried. They're off by just a little bit.

They're off by just a fraction but I believe they still do work despite this, don't they ?

I've never understood why the 16" mid design has never factored this in so that there would be the ideal alignment ... seems to make no sense, as it would require such a minor shift.

Don't remember signing up that long ago? Maybe I did at one point but just recently found this place form a guy at work. The mind IS the first thing to go they sayhe
Thanks for the replies. I am looking at the bushmaster 20in barrel and was not sure it would accomodate the bayonet.

Thanks
