I know what he meant. |
Define 'contract'. Contract with the US military, after winning a bid, contract with an overseas military? Contract to supply standard type A weapons, or a purchase order from a unit to buy test samples or limited distribution items? If you're talking actually suppling standard issue weapons. I'ts only Colt and FN - period. (GM and H&R had contracts in Vietnam for M16A1s but they has long since been completed) If you're talking special limited run contracts Add KAC (.308 rifles), and IIRC LMT (mk18) Bushmaster had a contract in the early 90s for a limited run of carbines meant for Army testing, but recently lost their contract for M16A4s as they are no longer a 'Small Busines'. IIRC Saber got the contract but has yet to produce a single rifle that has been accpeted (it will take a year or so till that occures). If you're talking unit purchases, jeeze just about everyone at some point. See FordGuy's comments on the AMU as a good example. I'm not sure if the H&K 416's come under this catagory or the limited contracts (as I've not seen a bid put out for 416's like we saw for the SASS and similar limited run models). Bushmaster, Olympic Arms, and Stag all have had overseas military contracts, as I'm sure several others have had. |

Sabre Defense From Defense Procurement News, July 17 The US Navy, along with the USMC, and acting for FMS customers awarded a contract to Sabre Defence to manufacture M16 rifles. See a press release here. Sabre becomes only the third company to manufacture military specification M16 rifles since its introduction in the early Sixties. The order seems small at under 6,000 rifles but the Army and USMC have turned to the Colt Industries M4 carbine over recent years. The Special Operations Command went with their own unique HK product as well. The number of M16 rifles in the US inventory is large and will probably support needs in the near future. |
