well now that i have my first ar i have been shopping for some things to add on to it and one of the first im looking at is a bipod. i was curious what you guy are all using and what your suggestions are. i was looking at some harris bipods due to my friends and family having so much good luck with them. but im looking for one that adjustable and can fold up quiet compactly. also looking for it to mount onto a half quad rail. if you have suggestions please post. EDIT: i also plan to use this from a prone or crouched shooting position. and maybe a little bit of bench. and if harris what variant would you use ? |

I have a Harris bipod and I love it. It folds up very compactly and adds very little to the weight of the weapon. It is an excellent design. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but sometimes quality is worth a little more money. EDIT: Sorry but I don't remember what model number my Harris is. I seem to have lost the paperwork. I believe it is the smallest one they make. I think the model number is "S" something or other. |
+1 I have two Harris bipods and one of the Shooters Ridge clones. IMO the Harris (original) product is worth the extra cash. |
What model is this? 6-9 or 9-13? |
You'll need a mount. There are a variety of mounts, from quick detach (like the Larue and Command Arms) to the fixed (like the YHM). By design Harris Bipods attach to sling studs so the mount will have a built in sling stud. |

stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=175 Thats what I use, won't use anything else. So nice to bring to the range with the ability to share it with any of my rifles and then remove it quickly when I don't need it. If you don't want the swivel version you can get it for around $140. |
I dont think Harris will have a bipod with that much adjustment? Mabe if you wanted to shoot prone and bench, but I dont think you will find one that will extend out to the length you need for a crouched shooting position. The best length I use for the first two is 6-9 inches, and you would prob need a 16-20 inch length to shoot crouched. But to each is own, go to a gun store and try one if they will let you. |
when you establish a stock to shoulder weld, how do you keep from collapsing the legs? |
I usually establish my should weld, then cheek weld, then place the bipod on the table and work on getting my NPOA...this is with 6-9" notched Harris. |
Well with mine, the legs are under quite a bit of spring tension when they are extended, so I haven't had any problem with the legs collapsing inadvertently. You really have to push on them to get them to retract. This is a really sweet rig. It's extremely comfortable. I am just a casual shooter/hobbyist/collector type guy, not an LEO or an "operator." If I were a professional user, then I guess I would use them as the pros do. |

I have the side mount VLTOR bipod. It has given me great groupings and is very stable. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll80/1Lovepics/DSC01308.jpg |
Nice rig. Is that the new SWAT model of the 556, or did you buy that rail system aftermarket? |
