Not quite sure, Most FH/FS are at least an inch & a half  or longer. I've never seen anything shorter/smaller than a A1/A2 birdcage. IIRC most manufactures stay around a workable length to avoid having issues with 14.5" and 14.7 " barrels. Too short and it may not qualify as a permanently attached flash hider/suppressor. But this would not be a concern for 16" or longer barrels. Check with Saylors Machine and Design Works.IIRC they have a FH that is shorter than a YHM phantom.

Three prong from the original M16 is probably the best for it's size.

But those aren't very good a flash suppression.

For reducing the overall length:

1) Go SBR.

2) Use a 14.7" barrel with a perm-attach Phantom.

It's good enough for a 14.5 or longer.

I'd rather have pretty much anything (except a brake) else. The shorter barrels just emphasize the suck of the 3 prong. There are much better designs out there. BSW

11.5" barrel, from top to bottom: 3 prong, USGI, fake Vortex, Vortex, Phantom, and Phantom.

I'm very skeptical of those results, because it looks nothing like what I have seen shooting at night.

Not mine, shamelessly stolen from the interweb. BSW

Barrel length is a big factor in how much flash you will get, just is the type of powder used and the type of FH.  If you are using a 16" or longer barrel, the A1 is probably your best bet, although you really don't lose much if anything discernible going with the A2.  That said, I have never seen a side by side comparison of the A1 and A2 FH's.

True. I have gotten mucho flash (visible in daylight in the shade) out of a 16" barrel when shooting Federal XM193. BSW
