I recently exercised a Constitutional right for the very first time. I bought my first rifle. I'd grown up around rifles and pistols and have inherited a few items from my dad and grandfather, but I had never bought a firearm on my own. I did what any newb in the internet age does and I asked around to see what I should get. I ended up getting a Stag M4 since I was looking for something for SHTF home defense and something that I could take up to the range. I even got the wife interested. What more fun could you ask for than to go to the range and go shooting with the wife! That is until she outshoots ya. Right now I'm using the flip up iron sights to get proficient before I look into something else. Eventually I am thinking I will go with the Aeotech Holosight despite the battery drain issue. Decision isn't final yet. Any way what I'd like to know is if any of you guys would have any pointers. The range I go to is lighted at 15, 35, and 50 yards. I finally my sights adjusted to get fairly consistent at 15 yards, but when I started working at 35 yards I could have swore that the paper target they sold me had bullet repellent. I could hit the target, but grouping was like a politiians election promises...all over the place. One thing I did notice is that the screw holding my rear sight (??One closest to my eye) was a little lose on the rail. That may have caused some of my problems. Anyway I just wanted to say Howdy, and see if I could tap into some of the wisdom that wafts around here. |

The allen wrench screw? Tighten that baby up! It will be affecting accuracy. Get the gun sighted it at 50 yds once you get proficient. Your probly flinching when you pull the trigger. This is what i did to remedy. 1. Make sure gun is UNLOADED. 2. aim and dry fire. (its not bad for ars to dry fire.) 3. If your front sight post moved you flinched. 4. Repeat until your FSP stays on the target through the dry fire. 5 . If you still flinch have someone load your mag randomly with live rounds and snap caps and go through the mag like that - if you flinch on the snap caps, you'll feel like and idiot and it fixes the problem real quick-like. Hope this helps and HAVE FUN! |

What kind of rear sight is it? It very well could be a crappy sight that needs replacement with something a little more robust. I like the advise above. If you aren't shooting from a prone/sitting position you should try that. Lots of ammo and about 10 magazines should be your first priority. I'd recommend PMags. Once your feel like you can make 2"-3" groups at 50 yards sitting down consistently (I am assuming normal inexpensive ammo in case anyone questions my group sizes) you should be ready to try standing up. If you find that one foot is in front of the other you are not posting up to the target correctly. When facing a target and standing both your feet should be even and both should be pointing at the target. Move the gun a little more toward the center of your body and raise the gun to your eyes, don't overly lower your head. With you squared up the the target your feel more in control of the weapon. The other things that could help is the type of trigger you use and the ammo too. Don't use Wolf, spend a little extra money on ammo, I'm thinking at least $10 per 20 rounds. If anything on the gun feels weird, your best bet is to replace it (M4 stock wabble for instance). Just keep shooting till it feels right. |
Thanks for all the advise guys. I can't wait to hit the range again and try some stuff out. I have 3 30 rd mags and one 20 rd. Tow of my 30rds are Magpul mags that I really like. I'm kinda interested in getting some more 20 rd mags, for simplicity's sake of one box of ammo per mag. I have noticed that if I keep the mags full I go through them very quickly at the range, even without trying to shoot fast.
The rear sight is what came with the rifle and I can't seem to find any kind of markings on it that specifies make or model. I do know that I did break the locking mechanism that keeps the sight up. I didn't find the relase button and pushed it down and something broke, but other than that the sight seems to be ok, other than it being a little loose right now. By lurking here and else where I did learn to be leary of Wolf ammo. For what it's worth, the range I shoot at test ammo with a magnet, and from what I heard Wolf would failed that test anyway. I have found a place that was selling some Federal 5.56 for a while, but they sold out before I could buy in any big volume. And yes I did check and my rifle does have 5.56 on the barrel. All in all I feel fairly blessed and lucky. I went into the gun shop and told them about what I wanted and bought the rifle that they had that seemed to have the bells and whistles that I wanted. It turns out after the fact when I started to look around that I really did get a good rifle. |
