I've got a AR with a fixed front sight. I would like to replace the front sight with a new gas block (one with a rail) so I can mount a flip up front sight. This is my first AR, so I dont really know an awful lot about them.  It looks like it might involve a decent amount of experience. Is this even something I could do myself? If so, what would I need in order to complete this? Should I just take it to a gunsmith? I would appreciate any help!

You can do it yourself.  Go to the Build It Yourself Forum. There is a thread there with instructions.

EASY AS PIE.

----drive the two taper pins out
----take the gas tube roll pin out
----pull the gas tube out the the FSB
----reinstall the gas tube with roll pin on new gas block
----line the gas port up with gas blocks port and tighted new block down

DONE

The two taper pins drift out to the starboard side ( same direction spent brass ejects).
Please don't ask how I know

You have to take your muzzle device off FIRST. Do this before you do any of the above. Check the build it yourself forum as a previous comment suggested. Good Luck!

Buy a Dremel and use the cutting wheels made for metal (costs more but worth it). Start cuttin' and patch up any mistakes with a black marker or quality duct tape. You don't have to remove any attachments.  Can be done in 15 minutes or less.  I did mine with a cordless dremel at the range.

Lets get back on topic guys .... don't feed the "*@#lls".

Trigger, just follow the link ALPHAGHOST provided. You will find all the info you will need there! I suggest you do it yourself ... it's fun to learn how to do things yourself.

A word of caution though, when you succeed - you will be hooked! I will bet my "*ss" you will start tinkering with the rest of your rifle!
