I was look at some ACOGs, and noticed that some folks mount a doctor red dot ontop.....its very small, and i am guessing they use it as a backup ....BURD???

I found an mount so it can add onto any type of picatiny rail....
and was wondering if anyone has just used this as a red dot alone, with out the ACOG

and any pics would be nice as well

-------EDIT------

any insight would be nice aswell.....like: "that would work fine" or "No it will fail miserably"
etc etc

Larue offers such a set up. IIRC it's called an Iron Dot & uses a similar optic, if the not the same one.

The doctor piggy backs the acog and is set up so that you have a non magnified optic.  It's not really a "back up".  You don't want to stand 10 feet from someone and attempt to use a magnified optic in a deadly force encounter.  So you train to use the non magnified optic.

And LaRue does sell several versions of the iron dot, one of which uses the Doctor.  The range in price from 349 to 499.  LaRue has designed a heavy duty frame for the optic with a built in back up/flip up iron sight.  They are pretty interesting. If money grew on trees I'd have one or three.

I used one for a while.  A protective mount is a must... its fairly fragile.  Its not quite as bright as an Aimpoin but it auto adjust to ambient light.  The window causes some distortion at the edges of the FOV of the window.

The TA31DOC offers a 1X capability for close range... its a 1X option, not a backup.  The other unit along with it that got to the finals for SOPMOD II optic testing is the Elcan Specter DR.  It also has 1x and 4X capability but doe it witha reducer for the 4X to make it a magnified 1X.  Due to the large objective its much better than a traditional 1X scope at 1X.

I don't really like the Doctor sights.  The dots are too hard to find.  Maybe it's just me.  An Aimpoint T1 Micro is about 1000x better on every level.  Plus, it's incredibly robust.  The Dr sights feel cheap and exposed.

It has always looked like a cool option for me also.  Just set it all of the way back on the rail, no BUIS and you are good to go.

In the Book of the AR15 mag that came out a few months ago there was an article using an ACOG and an offset mount that placed the docter canted to the right at 45 degrees. Look straight down the rifle as normal for the scope or rotate 45 degrees CCW to view the docter. There was a pic of him sighting don the barrel in the mag but this is the best pic I could find online. But it gets it off the top of the ACOG where it may be too high for some people.
