I thought I read somewhere that they were not interchangeable due to the locations of the pins being slightly different on each FSB, therefore you can't get a new one for an old barrel.

This doesn't seem right to me, though. With as modular a platform as the AR series, why make one part that isn't?

Anyone heard this? I'd like to swap mine out for an F-marked FSB at some point.

You might be taking "modular" just a bit too far...

There is no standard for the pin location, the FSB is considered part of the barrel actually.

Edited to fix spelling... oh, and your picture thing is annoying, perhaps seizure inducing.

Each FSB is individually drilled when initially installed so the pins & holes will be in different locations for each install. New FSB's have NOT been drilled for taper pins for this reason. In order for a new FSB to line up correctly in place of the original one you will prolly have to install a clamp on FSB such as the ones that Armalite uses for example or throw on a gas block which may or may not cover the old holes. I'm sure anything is possible with regard to trying to get a new FSB drilled to fit the old holes with the proper tools & machinery but this would still be more hassle than it's worth IMO. If you want the proper height for a flat top with a non-F stamped FSB then buy a taller FSP such as Bushmaster sells for a couple of bucks. If you just want a F stamped for the cool factor then buy a new barrel with one already installed.

No, but the barrel ASSEMBLY is "modular".

Why change out the FSB?  If you have a problem with sight alignment, get the .040" taller front sight post and problem solved.

Don't make this more difficult than it needs to be.
