How often if ever do you use the forward assist?

Every time I load a fresh mag.

Same here. It's so ingrained into my muscle memory  from the military that it's done without even a though.

I had a round that did not go all the way into battery when testing a new buffer. I had to use the FA to get into battery. It's the first time I had used it.

I can honestly say I have never used mine. Though I am glad it is there in case.
I do not remember during boot camp and MCT being trained to use the forward assist when dropping the bolt on a fresh magazine.

I distinctly remember it during boot camp and SOI and I did both in 1996....

Just pull back quick on the CH.  That or the bolt catch after you go through a mag.  I never use it.. don't have to.

Huh? Nobody is saying that you use the FA to chamber a new round from the mag.

I've never needed it either, but I have been taught to use it as a normal part of operating the weapon.....

There are a few of us here who were trained to use the FA. And as long as my weapon is equipped with a FA I will use it.

If you’ve never received similar training, and decide not to use the FA, then that is your decision.

You sure about that? The part highlighted in red certainly would have people wondering....

Sorry for the confusion!

What I meant to say is, 99.9999% of the time, you shouldn't have to use it if you properly use the charging handle.

ETA

And yes I appreciate that the FA is there.

Don’t we train for the time when that .0001% happens?
