Maybe i'm simple, but how do these things work?

put it against a piece of rebar and pull the trigger... just like the bajillion wire cutter type devices out there.

I think you have to use green tip though.

I guess after having heard the answer, it isn't unexpected. I just find it outright weird that regular ammunition is used in this way. It seems like the results would be irregular, if not dangerous.

Not really.  Up close, and that is where these work, high velocity is best.

You don't want to be at the sides, to say the least.

I was punching some ASTM A500 square tubing to make hanging targets.  It was 8x8 with 3/8" wall thickness.  Used 68 grain HPBTs from my AR, doing about 2900 FPS.  Punched it fine but a small jacket frag caught my buddy in the hand, drawing blood.

It was shot from about 10 feet and my buddy was standing right at my side.

the shape of the compensator makes me think they intend on you placing the rifle against the re bar point blank.

There will be frags.  Use proper protective equipment.  The frags backsplattering will be small.  The stuff coming out front will not.

Why would anybody who isn't in a war zone use a gun for that purpose?

I'd love to have one! We own a ready-mix concrete plant and sell rebar along with other supplies. It would be funny if someone came in and said they needed a few pieces of rebar cut and I the AR out and "cut" them to size.

Would you rather carry that or a saw/cutting torch?

When placing holes in reinforced concrete, some of the rebar may be left.  Easier and quicker to cut it with something like this then to use a saw, cut it with a torch, or place another charge.

If you have a good breacher you will never need one of these. It would take more time to cut through the remaining rebar than to go through another door/window/hole.

IMO they already know you are there after the bang. No since in sitting around to cut the rebar.

Good point.  Unless the enemy in that particular structure are deaf...

I just duct tape a pair of 24" bolt cutters to my handguard....I don't see the need for such a device.  I tape a crowbar on the other side to balance out the rifle.
