My bolt carrier thought it was too hot out today, so it decided to give itself a vent hole.  The hole is a about .125" in diameter.  Just big enough to let the bolt eject the spent case but lets out too much gas to push the carrier far enough back to strip the next round or lock the bolt open.

Surprisingly it is a very clean hole though atleast .290" of metal.  It is through the thicker part of the carrier between the firing pin and the gas rings on the bolt.  No other damage to any other parts, just this nice clean hole.  Any ideas what could have caused this?
Bad photographer = Bad pics

Is a full auto carrier stronger than a semi?

That little kitten looks innocent but it is a vicious beast.

It was hard trying to find good light for a pic, flash just reflected off the carrier.  I am not a photographer.

I have never seen anything like that, weakness when it was made maybe?

metal impurity? Doesn't seem likely.

I believe that is my first time even hearing anything of like that, beats me.  I'd toss it and get a new one, wouldn't trust it.

Interesting. Try for some better pix. Maybe manual focus... And, who's carrier was that? If it was any decent manufacturer they'll definitely replace it free.

It won't cycle completely because of the hole so it is garbage anyways.  I won't try to fix it and have it fail and injure myself.

I have better pics coming in a few minutes

Maybe a hole was drilled off location and then plugged, and the plug blew out

I have seen some strange things working in machine shops over the years, especially on parts and components that aren't aerospace (ie if it breaks nothing crashes from the skies!!).....

It is a Bushmaster carrier

Well, the LMT Enhanced Cariers have it in a different spot.

Yes, it is supposed to be there to prevent overpressure on the firing pin flange.

Blinded by BRD.  It's OK happens to the best of us.

If you buy another AR then you'll have another carrier to compare yours to.

Now you need to figure out the real reason your rifle wont cycle.
