no stupid questions. just looking in the wrong place. the place you want to start has a red pin stuck in it, it's the FAQ for AR15's. read that then get back to us. www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=306487 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=176348 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 |
Not a stupid question. Just a frequently asked question. What usually comes out is a bunch of fandom, which is OK really. A quality AR is a cobmination of quality parts and expert assembly. Right now, the market is full of companies offering quality parts, but very few have consistantly expert assembly. Most shooters don't push their guns hard enough to see the difference. Any of the 4 you listed are going to be fine, no matter what anyone else tells you about who's better. They're all pretty much the same. As 87GN says, those three are using parts that have undergone more QC testing, and are generally accepted as consistantly assembling their ARs correctly. The problem is you pay for that extra quality, anywhere between 20% and 50% more. What's your budget? Whatever it is, double or triple it. You need to buy ammo, magazines and a sling. |
Thanks |
Out of the List I would go ARMALITE Ive had GREAT luck with Bushmaster My List LMT NOVESKE COLT in any order |
|
I would have to say: NOVESKE, LMT, COLT in that order. I also own RR in SS, and a couple of Bushmasters. They have all been very good and eat 5.56 as well as 223 ammo without problems. I have found Bushmasters to require more break-in rounds than the others. Whatever you choose just make sure to clean it outa the box and keep the BCG wet. |
| RRA and Bushmaster is the choices I made when I was first shopping for AR-15 carbines. My RRA Entry Tactical is my HD/CQB setup and my Bushmaster Modular Carbine is my medium distance shooter (+200 meters). Thinking of going with a bolt gun and .308 for longer distances. |

Right now I'm on a Rock River kick. I love my TASC and I want a Varmit upper. I also have a Bushmaster thats been with me for awhile and i wouldn't trade it for anything. I've been lucky as both of these ar's have been completely reliable and trouble free except for wear and tear items. I don't think you really can go wrong if you buy anyone of the mentioned rifles new or build it yourself. It's the used guns that can be troublesome but thats because you may need to refurbish them as soon as you get it. Take your time, research each one you feel strongly about. Most vendors have their own areas here where you can observe what real users have to say wether pos/neg Welcome to the crack cocaine of the rifle world---the BRD |

Get something simple but high quality. If you want to use it as a duty rifle make sure you get something your department will allow you to use. Of the major AR manufacturers that make rifles that would suit your needs, I have had the most experience with Armalite, Colt and Noveske and would recommend each without reservation. LMT and Sabre make excellent rifles too, but I don't have enough personal experience with them to comment. You will save a good deal of money by purchasing an upper receiver and a lower receiver separately due to 11% FET on complete weapons, and in my opinion, 98% of an AR's reliability, accuracy and overall quality is in the upper receiver. If I were you, I'd get a Noveske or Colt upper, and whatever lower suits your fancy, and call it a day. But like I said, check with your department. |
I'll look into the purchasing separate.. Thanks.. |
I would take advantage of your position and buy a Colt LEO model while you can. It will be a little more then any of the other brands of course, but you do get what you pay for IMO. I say this also because the Colts only seem to go up in value as time goes by and more ridiclus AWB laws come into effect. I personally have a Colt but then again , I've never settled for second best. |
