Hey Folks,

I want to buy a rifle for my girlfriend.  We went shooting and of all my rifles, she liked the AR15 the best, due to low recoil and light weight.

So she wants one.

I am one of those Colt lovers, so please, no recomendations for other brands!

Colt does not offer new what I want to get her which is essentially a semi-auto M16 A3/A4 (AR15).

That is, a standard service rifle, 20" barrel, flat top receiver, not neutered.

So the closest thing Colt will sell today seems to be MT6700C.  This has a compensater on it which I assume is not the same as an A2 flash hider.

Here's the questions:
1.  Can a standard A2 style flash hider be installed on a MT6700C?
2.  Can a standard A2 front sight with bayo lug be mounted on a MT6700C?
3.  Any (Colt) recommendations?

Thanks.

I like your planning, but you didn't mention a major factor here. Rhode Island gun laws

IIRC, they are akin to CT, or MA laws, no?

If I am wrong, then the answers are easy:

#3 - the Colt LE line (6920, 6721, or even 6921) For a 20"er, get a Colt lower you like (many good options) and add a complete Colt 20" upper from Fidelis, or SAW.

#1 - The comp can be changed out, but not easily with common tools. Requires a 'smith or skilled machinist.

#2 - It is not recommended you change out FSB's (for bayo inclusion) Just get a new barrel assembly or upper

If RI laws prohibit this, go pre-ban (one made before the '94 ban and exempt from the restrictions - IMPORTANT to study your state laws on the ownership issues and not take my word for it.)

Redfisher,

Thanks for the info.

Fortunately, RI does not have any AR ban laws like MA and CT, so I legally bought and own a LE 6920 here.

I was hoping to not have to assemble this rifle completely from parts, like you suggest, but if that's the only way, so be it.

What is the issue with replacing the front sight base?

Also, how is the stock MT6700C comp attached?  Soldered or brazed or something?

Thanks again.

The stock comp is pinned on and easily removed. The threading of the barrel is the difficult part. When I had to de-Klintonistanize my Colt MT6400's, I sent them to ADCO, a vendor here. I did not worry about the bayo lug, and stuck with the Klintonistanized sight base.
