I'm about to take my barrel off to get it threaded,  I've looked at some schematics but still have no idea how to take it off, does anyone here know??

Look in the Build it Yourself section.. A very good thread is tacked with pics on how to assemble/dissasemble your upper.

You will probably need the barrel nut wrench unless you can make due with a subtitute tool. Basically you would need to un-pin the FSB and slide it out far enough that the gas tube clears the barrel nut, take off the handguards and then unscrew the barrel nut. Simple as that.

That's not necessary. Remove the roll pin from the FSB and remove the gas tube by sliding it into the upper receiver and out.

If you plan on owning one AR or several, go out and buy the proper tools required.

With the right tools, wrenching on your AR is very easy.

A big +1 to that.  I've had several barrels where the taper pins for the FSB simply would not come out but I've never had a front sight base roll pin that wouldn't come out.

Besides, the armorers manuals states that teh correct process is to remove the roll pin and says that the taper pins shouldn't be touched.
