Hey all I currently have a Spikes tactical m4 which I truely love I got all the goodies on it when I bought it. I am currently thinking about building a custom m4. Question I have is it better to buy a rifle and then upgrade the parts I want or should I buy a stripped lower and upper and build from there? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheaper to build from the ground up.

as a general rule of thumb, no, unless it's a 308 upper and a 5.56/.223 lower.

I prefer the CMT/Stag uppers from Rainier Arms, they are set-up nicely, with t-marks.
Pick a roll-mark you like for a lower. DS has a dragon, Stag has a deer, Colt has a pony twirling it's baton......they all work just fine. Avoid cast lowers, and carbon lowers suck too. 7075 forged lowers are all about equal.

Thanks Im going t get a Spikes lower then. How hard is it to put this thing together? Will I need special tools or take it to a gunsmith? I think he uses POF lowers?

Not necessarily true.

I started with an MGI upper, then bought pieces over the course of last year.  Since I didn't pay all the cost upfront, I bought the best parts I could and ended up with an EBR over $4k.

see thats what I was thinking I want a larue handguard, Timney trigger, Chrome lined barrel, Flat top receiver, and such. I just hate to replace parts and have all the xtra stuff lying around. Maybe Ill see if Spikes can build me one cheaper than I can.

If they use the same parts as you would in a build, I don't see how they could sell it cheaper than you could build it.

They'll charge you retail (give or take) for the parts, plus their labor.  And, if it's a complete rifle you'll have to pay the extra tax, transfer fees, etc.

Of course you'll have to buy tools for the build if you don't already have them.  But, that just give you incentive to build more.

I am in the process of putting together an M4gery. I bought a like new CMMG 14.5" M4 A3 upper assembly with CMMG BCG and charging handle (w/ PRI Big Latch). It also has a permanent SDI extended A2 FH. All that for $450 shipped. Also bought a like new Colt detachable carrying handle for $75 shipped. Lastly, I have a LMT Defender lower w/ standard trigger and LMT M4 stock on order. The whole build is a little less than $900. A good quality build for a good price. It pays to shop around.
