I'm looking to make my first AR purchase. My intent is a SHTF Urban Rifle (seems a more likely scenario with each passing yr.). My likes are straight forward: KISS, functional only, anticipation beats a cure, and so forth.

After looking and reading for months on end, I'm leaning towards RRA mid-length with:
-chromed barrel
-free-float RRA half-quad handguard (front 1/2 is quadrail, rear 1/2 is round grip)
-green furn., fixed stock, Hogue grip
-A4 with flip-up rear sites

Questions:

1. Are there any advantages to a stainless steel barrel?

2. If so, are there coatings that will adhere to stainless?

3. What advantages would there be in flip-up front sights?

Thank you for your insights/comments.

I have a stainless that is kg coated courtesy of ADCO Firearms, you can also duracoat, and
i'm positive there are many more that will adhere,

as far as flip up sights, you can use a primary  sight/optic like a Eotech/Acog/Scope, and if that
happens to fail you remove and flip up your BUIS. You know, all else fail SHTF type stuff.

I don't know about the rail though i would get full rails and just put some covers on it, just my opinion.

This sounds like a winner
Questions:

1. Are there any advantages to a stainless steel barrel?SS barrels are more accurate thean chrome lined or moly, however they also have a shorter life span than chrome lined so there is a trade, since most companies offer SS in bull barrel only it will not suit your needs.

2. If so, are there coatings that will adhere to stainless?  Duracoat among others

3. What advantages would there be in flip-up front sights?   Some find the front sight annoying so they want it out of thier field of view when using optics.

Thank you for your insights/comments.

Sounds like you got a good plan, cleaning gear & good mags are a must.

Your weapon sounds great, but I would not do the half-rail, half-grip thing.  Buy a set of rails that will complement your weapon, not restrict it, e.g., SureFire, Midwest Industries, KAC, etc.
