I am planning on buying my first AR in May and need some pointers. I am 6'4, and I have handled M4 Carbines with 4 position stocks before, and the length of pull is awful on me--even at full extension. I plan on using the gun to train with and home/ranch defense. I have been looking at a Rock River Mid Length A4 flat-top w/ A2 Buttstock or their Full Size 20" rifle--which do you guys think would be a better fit? I know the Mid-Length is just a 16" Carbine with different handguards, but with the A2 busttstock, it might fit me. Either way I go, since I am getting a flat-top, I plan on installing a Larue Stand alone BUIS and install a bottom rail with a Foregrip. For optics, I am leaning toward a Aimpoint M2 with Larue QD Mount. Please give me your opinions--I need to make a decision. |

You can't really go wrong with either. I would definitely get a government profile barrel (light weight under the handguards) if I was going to carry it any distance or train with it. I would probably pick the midlength since it's lighter to train with and carry, and it's easier to menuever indoors for HD. Since you're going to add an optic (aimpoint in larue mount is a good choice BTW) the extra sight radius of the 20" isn't really useful. The extra velocity the 20" barrel gives you is only really useful when killing stuff past 150 yards or keeping bullets super sonic at several times that distance. I own and enjoy both 20" and 16" ARs, but if I could have one, it would be a 16". ETA: BTW, the way RRA's website reads, it sounds like the only difference between a carbine and midlength is handguards, but that's now so. The front sight block is further towards the muzzle on a midlength which gives you a longer sight radius with irons, a longer handguard, and longer gas tube that smooths the recoil impulse. Also a 16" govt profile midlength barrel will be lighter than a 16" govt profile carbine barrel since more of the barrel is thinner under the handguards. |
| I have the Elite Car A4 as well. Check with Pete@ legal tranfers in the EE section. He probably has one with your name on it. So far it's been a great gun. It is a mid length gas system, not a carbine. If it's legal in your state why don't you want the colapsable stock? |
