I went to the range yesterday to shoot my Bushmaster 20" Target Model. I was using Wolf steel cased ammo. The first 100 rounds shot flawlessly but the last 40 or so I had many problems with. The gun failed to feed the next round into the chamber. It acted like a bolt-action. Since the gun worked fine in the beginning I'm assuming it had to do with the rifle getting dirty? It seems like there wasn't enough gas to cycle the bolt. Is it just because the steel doesn't expand like brass and get's the chamber dirtier?

Also, the gun is new and only has about 300 rounds through it. Could it just be "breaking in"?

Thanks for the help.

Did you lube it generously?Check the mags feed lips?check the carrier key to see if its loose. When it failed to feed did the carreir stop mid ejection port or did the bolt make contact with the next cartridges case head and just not go forward. If it stopped mid port id say gas..in any event even a hair thin gap between carrier and key will cause gas loss.Check the gas tube st the FSB and just make sure the pin is in..a remote possibilty it could have worked free and the tube moved.Bad mags or the carrier key I think.

If the rifle fired but failed to complete its cycle it could just be the black box under powered wolf.It doesnt work good in the buddies 20" but then his rifle is new too and could just be the weak ammo new stiff rifle action combo.Try the military classic wolf its got a bit more power.Wolf is dirty so this combo combined with not enough lube or even a bad mag can ce a murphy combo.Hope this helps.

The rifle fired and I believe the spent round ejected however the next round did not chamber. The bolt did close all the way though. Is that possible?

I guess I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to what was happening. I'll clean it and lube it well and see if I have any FTF's next time.

Short stroking.  My 20" Bushmaster did it the first few hundred rounds too with Wolf.

I recommend firing 200-300 rounds of full powered M193 or M855 ammo, cleaning and lubing well, and then trying the Wolf again.  Should be good to go after that (at least mine is).

Thanks for the responses. I will take your advice. After I shoot up my Wolf I'm on to reloading anyhow.
