If you want to shoot the rifle stock out of the box, get whichever floats your boat. If you want to expand the capability of the rifle with lights, optics, or other items, get an AR platform .308. Armalite, Noveske or KAC.

while it wasnt in your options a PTR 91.   CDNN sells the standard almost crazy like cheap.   the options for parts are numerous ie .... quad rail, wide or thin forearms, retractable, folding or standard butt stocks, optic mounts are numerous, 20 rnd magazines are dirt cheap (10 for 20 dollars?), easy to maintain, and a blast to shoot.  i got a brand new wide forearn, bayonet adapter, new bayonet/ scabbard, new HK sling for 115 shipped.   cant do that on almost any other gun.

Don't forget the DPMS .308's.  I've had great success with mine.

Overall, I'd agree with new-arguy completely, but would go even further for the AR.  After finding a platform as sweet as this, I think it goes way beyond just being able to stick on lights, optics etc.  If one is so inclined, from a cost point of view, you could go from one extreme to the other in seconds with just one rifle and a spare upper.   You could have a 16" (or less) barrel upper with an EOTech or Aimpoint for CQB one minute or a 20 or 24" scoped countersniper piece the next.  Actually, the 16" barrel DPMS is very accurate as it is, but you do give up about 150 fps vs a 20" rifle.  Also, with just one lower you would only have to put money into ONE trigger and it would then be familiar for "both" rifles.

I have the 16" upper now, and am planning on getting a 20 or 24" soon.

I like my 5.56 NATO served by an AR and I like my 7.62 NATO served by an M14 because it's natural

If lights and optics are your thing, modern M14 stocks are available with plenty of rail space.
