I don't have a camera at the moment but I will post a picture of the problem when I get one. For now I'll use this stock picture and maybe with a little imagination you guys can help me. The main problem with the receiver is the rear take down pin system. Rear Take Down System As seen in my poor illustration shown at the link above, the spring is exposed. This is because an employee at my local Gun Shop installed the Take Down Pin backwards. He hammered the take down pin out and the detent broke off causing a larger hole. Placing the detent pin back in, would just have it slip right through the hole. Can a Gun Smith fix this? Also, does any one know of a Rear Take Down pin or System that will not need the use of the detent and spring? I purchased this receiver for 30 bucks and I plan to make it my weekend shooter/plinker. It was 100% new but because of this problem the gun store took $90 off. Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
I suppose you could get a pin that used C clips or something. You could counterbore the damaged section and put a sleeve in to effect repair. Honestly though I think this is a perfect job for JB weld. Find a steel rod of the same size as the detent hole and smoke it black with candle soot (as a release agent). Work the JB weld in to the damaged area and trim it once its dry. Its a $30 receiver. Don't agonize over it. |
| Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm not really stressing over it. It's going to be my shooter/ camp rifle, so its going to get beat up anways. Plus I thuoght it would be a fun little project to fix. I think Im just going to put a PullPpin for the time being, but I'd like to try that JB weld solution that MND suggested. |

Another vote for the Seriously, HE broke it, and any ethical busnessman should take responsibility for damaging a customer's property-particularly for destroying it-and make things right. |

So basicly what your saying is you need a alternative to the normal rear pin because the hole where the detent and spring goes into is now bigger from bubba gunsmithing causing the detent to turn sideways enough to fall into the takedown pin? If the above is correct CLICK ME ![]() The above KNS take down pin will eliminate the spring and detent which will also make stock changes a little more enjoyable |

My bad-the "I bought it for $30" is so far down in the post that I was already ticked off at the idiot that broke it and didn't see the text. Sorry. In this case, maybe some J-B weld over the cracked part would help, but you'd have to put it on with something IN the detent hole and let it harden... |
Okay, now this question. Does anybody make a similar pin for a large pin Colt? I need a front pin for mine that I don't have to take out with screwdrivers. |
Maybe a WD 40 red straw? |

Wow, I didn't know I had so many "Fixes" to choose from. Thanks for the reply guys. I went to Home Depot today and bought a 1/4 inch Pin and E clip as a temporary fix. And I'm actually considering to try all your suggestions perhaps in this order: mvician - shorter spring and then longer detent solution. I couldnt find anything close to a detent type substitution at Home Depot. I might fabricate this piece from a "finishing nail" MND - JB Weld - I have a tube of weld already in the garage. Sculpting it will probably be the hardest part. And if all else fails.... I will use Hunter121- Push button pivot suggestion. Thanks Hunter! I actually should just go with this solution first. But i have strong urge to be macgyver this weekend. Finally after everything is done, I might as well go with GHPorter's and make that Gun Shop employee build me a new Lower for being an idiot........ htWeekend Plinker. The gentleman helping me said they had a new Stag-15 LE marked receiver with a chip in the detent hole. He said there was no need to spend 100+ on a receiver that was going to take abuse. He offered me a deal. If i were to buy my the Lower Kit and stock from him he'd sell me it for $30. I didn't even think twice and purchased it on the spot!!! All together (tax and background check fee not included) I had a complete lower for $120 ( $55 Lower Kit + $35 UTC 6 position stock + $30 LE Stag-15) Again thanks for the tip guys. Looks like i got some gunsmithing to do this weekend. |

Clean the distorted aluminum out of the way as it is weak and will get in the way. Using a Dremel with a small burr bit, make the damaged area a bit larger in diameter and rough. Clean the receiver with a good degreasing solvent like acetone and then fill the area with carefully mixed JB Weld. Concentrate on the damage but Let it cure and wait. You should be able to use correct-sized drill bits to redrill the detent hole to specification. Trim the outside back to original contour and touch up with black paint. To make the detent work better, a slightly longer detent and shorter spring will keep the stress on the repaired area low |
Wow, what a bargain... you bought a piece of trash for $30. That lower belongs in a scrap heap IMO & I would never trust it to hold up no matter how much JB Weld I plastered on the damn thing. Did you check to see if the gun store also had a cracked stock for sale, or maybe an old shot out barrel you could buy? After all, its only going to be your "weekend shooter/plinker," right? To each their own, but personally I think you were had (willingly no less). |

Thanks for the pointers Keith_J. I use to roughen up edges when i solder but I didn't think about making the hole bigger and rougher. Thats a good idea. Do you have a recommendation on what I can use for a longer detent? I was going through a box of nails i had, but i dont think i have one that small in diameter |
