I work for a small police department and I am trying to get the admin to purchase patrol rifles for us. I personally own a Stag, being left handed but I was looking for any insight on if it makes a difference on the manufacturer. Also where would be some options in purchasing them. Any and all responses are welcome... Rob |

Small job here as well (Peekskill)/60 sworn. We deploy LMT AR's (semi) for non-TAC members and LMT Auto for TAC members on patrol. Very happy w/ the LMTs. Have had thenm since 2006 w/ no issues thus far. Looking at $900 each for the basic patrol carbine. The autos are 14.5" EOTECH, Railed FF, BUIS, VFG, etc..... Semi's are kiss. |

I would say to stick with LMT or Colt. They will both be Milspec so you won't have to worry about 3rd party accessories (stocks, BUIS) not working with the carbines. I, personally, own 3 LMT complete rifles and love them. If you want to upgrade to a piston-driven gun, I would suggest LWRC or Hk. Both are superb weapons. They are going to be pricier than the standard gas impingment carbine, but worth the money, IMO. But, that is a topic that has been beaten to death around here and, being a small dept., you probably won't get that much money cleared. |

Don't forget your agency can get M-16 rifles for free through DRMO. If the full auto is an issue, then they can FIX that. The guns would of course remain the property of the department, but you could always slap your own uppers on them. DRMO also does optics. A small department about 30 miles South West of here got ACOGs for all their guns. Have your chief or range guys look into it. In this area, small departments seem to go for Bushmaster rifles since they offer a pretty good deal to small departments. Larger ones do Colt, LMT, Bushmaster, or RRA. I'd go straight for quality. Ask for Colt or LMT first and see what happens. If nothing else that'll set the price bar a little higher so the price of the Bushmasters or whatever doesn't seem so bad. But I'd go for the best rifles you can get. |
There have been several solid proposals written up to show why 5.56 weapons are safer for the department, admin, and the public. It might be worth talking to other departments, or their firearm/ range staff, and finding out what they did in the way of testing and documentation. Most larger departments are more than happy to help out if they get a letterhead request. One of the largest hurdles you might face is the budget aspect. If not, make sure you look at outfitting the entire weapon, to include sling, mags, optics, lights etc. My department issues little in the way of support for long guns, but hopefully that is something we can get changed. I would swear that guys on the smaller departments have it easier sometimes when it comes to making changes, bigger departments never want to change anything unless they have to. Stay safe. |

The state police agency I work for issues an AR to every patrol officer from M/Sgt on down to Tpr. Ours are a "Heinz 57". Started with Bushy's 6 years ago and now low-bid is Armalite. We do have some gov't Colt "de-mils" issued as well. You can also submit paperwork to carry your personally owned rifle as long as it meets certain criteria. Stay Safe. |

It will depend heavily on what your admin will accept. I'm not a purist by company. Many AR's can be purchased from many companies that will be reliable and well suited to duty use. One option, if money is a problem, is individually owned rifles by department members. Some departments get hung up on that but thankfully mine isn't one of them. The only issued rifles we have are the old M16A1's from Uncle Sam. They are ok but not well suited to patrol use due to length and lack of accessory options. We were told we can't modify them. I recommend any policy require a sling and a light system and any rifle supplied by the department needs these items as well. Other than that, get somebody to be a certified armorer and they can work on and check rifles before clearing them for duty use. |

East Syracuse Huh? Are the habitual speeders getting unruley on 298? ![]() Just make sure if you have to deploy those damn things you discharge them anywhere other than towards Tipp Hill. We already have enough bullets to dodge here
