I want to make my own two point sling. Is it ok to run the strap through the front sight base or tower?

You can, lots of people do, but you can get a side sling swivil that attaches to your barrel between your FSB for about twenty bucks that will work well too.

yes but there are two problems:

1.  Hot barrel + nylon sling = gooey mess of molten nylon
2.  It always seems to get wrapped around the top of the front sight and block the view.

Go here and buy part# AR0161, "Side Mount Sling Swivel"

Easy to install, very secure and keeps the sling where it is supposed to be.

While I don't like the price the MI QD swivels are awesome.  Have them on 4 AR's and love em.
