Looked around here for a long time, and I am wanting to purchase I new AR. I was thinking about building one with a LMT complete upper and lower. It seems that I can build a complete rifle for just a little more than buying a new RRA. What would you all say about the quality? This would be for home defense, so I want something good.

Also do you have to buy the tax stamp to get the 14.5" barrel? I love that set up.

Please do not be too hard on a new guy. Just trying to get this in before the regime change.

Thanks,

Adam

LMT makes a great product. Every now and agin some of their recievers come out a little purplish (not quite as purple as some KAC from what I have seen) but its never bothered me any. A few guys complain about the lack of finish under the FSB but I am religious about keeping my guns clean with a light coat of oil on them so that hasnt seemed to be a problem for me either.

Yes you have to get a tax stamp for an SRB unless you perm. attach a longer flash suppressor or whatnot but then you may as well have the longer barrel.

LMT is "very" reliable for home defense.  I would get the full auto bolt carrier group instead of semi auto if it was me and not look at RRA.

You don't need a tax stamp for 14.5" barrel but will need the flash hider perm. attached with a phantom flash hider or one a touch longer than the standard A2 birdcage.

I believe global tactical still perm. attaches FH's.

If you are going for a tax-stamp SBR, go 10.5".

I've got a LMT carbine, it's of good quality and it's the closest to Colt in having the most Mil-spec features.

The other non Mil-spec features that it have are straight instead of taper pins of the FSB, single layer instead of double heat shields of the handguards, and they come with standard carbine buffer instead of a H (heavy) buffer.

LMT have one of the best barrels with 1/7 twist, chrome lined, M4 feedramps and their BCG (I would recommend their M16 BCG) have properly staked bolt carrier key screws, both barrel and bolt are high pressure test fired and MPI (magnetic particle inspected) each and every one.

I upgraded my extractor spring with the BCM (Bravo Company) extra power spring and the standard carbine buffer with the LMT H buffer they work well with my LMT M16 BCG, no problems at all.

To get a tax stamp or using a permanently installed long FS is up to you, I'm used to the old 16" CAR look of my former Colt R6420 and R6530 Sporter Lightweight carbines so I got the 16" upper.

Thanks for all of the great info. I have a few more questions though if you all will humor me. Why does LMT not make a complete rifle package? Buying the upper and lower seperate is not a problem, I was just wondering. Also I assume that since it is mil-spec it only comes in 5.56 NATO. That is the calliber that I wanted so I guess it is not really an issue. Is the finish on the rifles standard mil-spec? I have been looking around there site and have not been able to obtain much information.

Last, where is the best place to buy from, and what is the wait time like? I have found some dealers that carry the uppers, but not many that carry the lowers. Any info would be great.

I love the fact that it already comes with the upgraded stock and grip. Again it seems that there price runs fairly close to what you would expect to pay for a RRA, and with better quality.

Thanks for all of the help,

Adam

Do yourself a favor and buy the LMT and don't worry about the details. You are going to find out later that you made the best decision for your first AR.

Although they sell to us Civilians they still act more like a military/LEO contractor which is fine with me. The finish on my LMT is the best I have run into on a stock AR.

You will have to do some paper work for the 14.5" barrel unless you extend it which I never really cared to do myself. Or you can go with a 16" with no hitch but that's a personal decision you need to make.

Hit the order button

The first AR that I bought was a Wilson Combat. When the need arose for some extra funds, it was the first thing to go. I have realized since, that for my purpose, I paid a little too much. I can buy a LMT, put optics on it, put a Surefire on it, put a rail system on it, buy a bunch of mags, and still be less then I paid for the Wilson.

Thanks again,

Adam

yea I have heard great things about Wilson AR's. I know their 1911's are amazing.... you would think that the slides on those were made of glass. But yea their stuff is def. on the high end of price. Wouldn't mind owning one though.

Sorry to hear that you had to let it go.... I know how it is sometimes.

Why does LMT not make a complete rifle package?

Probably so you don't have to pay the 11% tax on a complete rifle.  I.E. cheaper for you to buy that way.

Also I assume that since it is mil-spec it only comes in 5.56 NATO.

Only comes in 556 NATO.  Most don't want 223 anyway in a fighting rifle.

Is the finish on the rifles standard mil-spec?

They don't parkerize under the front sight base.  But in my opinion that is a non issue unless you plan on removing the FSB with something else.

Last, where is the best place to buy from, and what is the wait time like? I have found some dealers that carry the uppers, but not many that carry the lowers. Any info would be great.

If you're planning on buying the 14.5 barrel and perm. installing the FH then I'd go with Global Tactical/Denny's Guns.  They and ADCO are the only ones that I know that will pin/weld the flash hider.  ADCO didn't have any available last time I checked.

For your lower, I'd just buy straight from LMT and have it shipped to your FFL.

I am looking into getting the tax stamp so that I can get the SBR. If I do not do that I will just go with the 16".

I love the idea about the 14.5" with the phantom, but how do I get it leagally? Do I order it with it already on? Where do I order from?

Also what is the advantage of the F/A over the S/A BCG? Can the F/A be ordered without a stamp?

Thanks,

F/A has more mass then the S/A.  I have all S/A with no problems.  Has anyone else here running S/A had the need to upgrade to F/A?

No stamps needed for a F/A carrier.

Again thanks for all the help. I will get in touch with Denny's next week and ask about that. Off the top of your head, does anyone know how much they would chage to do the permanent install? I assume that the barrel just has to be 16" including the flash suppressor? That would save me a couple hundred bucks if I do not have to get a stamp.

Also it says that they will install a LaRue or DD rail for free if you purchase it at the same time. To me that seems like a pretty good deal. Now I just can wait to get a little more money together.

Have you considered the LMT MRP upper, with the one piece upper and rail?
2/9/2008 3:29:18 PM EDT
[#29]
Highly recommend LMT MRP.....If you are doing the paperwork for a SBR get the 10.5 and for $350 you can get the 14.5 or 16 later.  Literaly a 3 minute barrel change over.  Not that you really need to change barrels often.  I do go back and forth between 16" SS bench barrel and 14.5 blaster.

Dont drink the Colt Koolaid.  I have both.  Not nocking Colt, but IMHO LMT is the shitz........................
2/9/2008 3:31:25 PM EDT
[#30]
I love the MRP idea but it is a little out of my price range right now. It looks like I can get the upper that I want for about $485 and then add the rail and BCG. Then I can get the lower for about $511. With everything that is about $1325. I wanted to stay around 1k, but I will pay a little more for quality. Then I can add my optics and a light and have a pretty sweet rig, I think.

It took two months to get the upper, but I think it was worth it for the price. It's currently on it's way to Adco.
Everyone, I found, is in the same ballpark when it comes to the lower, BCG, and charging handle.
If you went with LMT handguards and LMT M4 stock you could knock off approx. $300.
If you buy it from a dealer who is not able to do the permanent flash hider attachment, just have them ship it to a shop who can. Make sure the dealer includes your information.
My spread sheet does not include shipping or FFL fee. I'd guess-timate $80 total for all that.

EDIT-That is supposed to be Knesek...

So, once the suppressor is fixed in place, it is considered a non SBR. How does that work with the ATF? Is the dealer allowed to sell it without any problems at that point?

Sorry for the questions, I just have never delt with this before. Again, thanks for all the help. You all are great.

I could have had the upper shipped direct to me if I wanted...but, then I'd be in possesion of an illegal NFA item since I do not own a SBR registered lower.
Once the flash hider is permanently attached, you're good to go. No registration of any kind.
2/9/2008 6:19:44 PM EDT
[#36]
Thanks, that may be the way I go.

I also thought about maybe going a little wilder. Since this will be my primary home defense gun, I thought about going really short. Maybe along the lines of 10.5"
What do you all think?

Could someone tell me what all I would have to do to get the tax stamp? Do I have to have the lower first? I have no idea, please lead me down the right path.

LMT 10.5 Issued Duty Rifle

Glad to hear you are looking at LMT.  In June I ordered a 14.5in LMT upper and Defender 2000 Lower w/ SOPMOD from Rainier arms, and a Denny's super duty M16 bcg.  I had my bcg in 3 days, my upper within 5 days and my lower within two weeks (FFL's fault...).  I had a VLTOR fh perm attached by a local smith for $20.00.  IFIRC you can legally posses a upper with a less than 16" bbl length as long as you do not attach it to the lower, however do not wait a long time to have the fh perm attached.  I would save the trouble and just have Denny or someone else attach the fh before receiving the upper.

I have had around 600 rounds through my LMT without so much as a hiccup (some wolf too).

If you are looking into the SBR route (whether 14.5 or 10.5) you can find out what you need to know here: SBR Info

Good luck, you won't be disappointed with LMT.

Sobe, thanks for the link and the info. It is all pretty clear. Just a couple of questions for you. Would my local PD have the finger print cards? Also, where does it say in the ATF link what must be engraved into the receiver? The link did not work for the state info, but I am pretty sure that you can own regulated firearms anywhere in GA.

I know a buddy a work that lives in the next county over and he has 3 or 5 cans.

Thanks to everyone who posted pictures. Your rifles look awesome. I really do want to go with the SBR, but it sure seems like a real pain in the butt. With my luck I am sure my sheriff will not sign my form 1 or something. Oh well, I will buy my lower so I have a SN to work with and go from there.

You know I'm not really sure.  I'm only eighteen and I have not really looked into the SBR requirements.  As far as I know you have to have your name, city, and state engraved on the lower.  I'm sure if you posted a topic with your questions here: General Class 3 you could get the info you need, or perhaps someone more knowlegable will read this post.

Good luck, all this trouble will be worth it in the end

It seems like the new "fad" is "designer" ARs.  Why go to Bloomingdales when you could hit up JC Pennys and get essentially the same thing for tons cheaper, just a different tag??
