You don't need a ffl, but you do need to get the services of a ffl holder to do out of state or store purchases for the transfer.

If you buy online FFL holders in your area will probably do the transfer for around $25 but YMMV.

let me qualify this first;

I was a Marine!

now just because your roomate is one will not qualify him to know the first thing about an ar. he may be able to kill you from 500yds with open sights but most marines have never and will never strip a bolt down or put in a trigger.

buy a CMMG gun or another of similar quality and have fun. learn as much as you can and build the ar's that follow.

have the Leatherneck teach you how to use your ar properly.
