What is the difference between a single stage trigger and a two stage trigger. I'm looking at getting a new trigger and I don't really understand the difference. Thanks for the help..

Basically, a two stage has a take-up (1st stage) to a light "stop" (felt not actual) , then a sharp let-off (2nd stage). They are used to give an "instant" let-off, when desired, instead of the long travel of a standard trigger.

It's very hard to really describe one, so my suggestion is to head on down to the gun shop and see if you can try one. You will probably like it better than the standard, most do.

Above description is accurate.

Another way of looking at it is that the lightest safe let-off pull for a single stage trigger is ~ 4lbs. You can get lighter triggers, but you would only use them in competition, and even then you risk an AD.

With a two stage trigger, the first stage might be three or four lbs, its a smooth take up, then you come up to a "stop", which if you like, is the actual trigger - this can be only one or two lbs.

Overall, you have a 6 or 7 lbs trigger pull, but you know when you reach the last pound or so, so you have the advantage of a very light trigger (for all practical purposes), with the safety of a much heavier trigger.

The only real disadvantage is a longer overall pull, but depending on how the trigger is adjusted, that may be negligible.

Two-stage triggers come into their own for very precise shooting.

Varmint gun = precise shooting (depending on how big your varmints are, and how far you are away from them).

For that application I would suggest a two stage.
