Have longed for an M4A3 and hope to make that a reality soon.  Two questions from this rookie:

1.  The rifle I am strongly considering has a 1 in 9" barrel twist.  What bullet weight will give me the best longer range accuracy?  I do recognize that the shorter M4 barrel affects long range accuracy.

2.  Magazine recommendation.  I am leaning toward C Products mags - which followers should I get green or orange?

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

IMO, for 1 in 9 twist i wouldnt shoot anything over ~62 grain and for the mags, i have both USGI green and Magpul grey/orange and both function flawlessly.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

First off, a 1/9 has the potential to stabalize the 75's and 77's.  You just have to try them.  Only firing up to 62 is stupid.  The 68's and 69's will most certainly stabalize.  You just have to see what your barrel likes.  I've fired 77's from a 1/9 and they stabalized to 60 yards and worked well.  However, if I tried further out, I may have gotten different results.  Again, you just have to try.

Secondly, a shorter barrel doesn't necessarily mean worse accuracy than a longer barrel.  It has nothing to do with length.  It has more to do with construction.  How good of a barrel.  Shorter barrels actually may have less torsional whip during firing and have the potential to be even more accurate.  You do lose velocity in a shorter barrel but really won't be evident except in trajectory at longer ranges, or hitting steel.

I suggest you read the tacked threads above and please read the ammo-oracle.  Both of you.

Buy USGI mags or Pmags I guess.  I don't have any pmags.  I don't change my followers but maybe I should. I don't have a problem with the green ones.  Or even the black ones for what it's worth.

I have never owned an AR with a barrel that was not 1/9 and have only shot 62 gn bullets that worked fine, if you want to shoot heavier you may want to consider a 1/7 or get the 1/9 and try heavier bullets and see what happens. I happen to like the mags from CP, I have a bunch and every one I have tried works fine. I have a few with orange followers but the rest of my mags have the green follower. I have had problems with the old black followers but they have all been replaced.

Correct. Barrel length is low on the scale for how it affects accuracy. The contruction of the barrel is #1 followed by quality of bullets/rounds. The most important attribute to barrel length is velocity. You lose about 50FPS per lost inch of barrel.

Id personally go with a 1/7 twist as they are much more forgiving with the heavier rounds...
