My next build is going to be an IDF "clone". I use the term loosely, because it will probably be an A1 with a deflector (where else am I gonna put the tactical velcro? ).

It will most likely be a CMMG light weight that will eventually get chopped. Which leads me to my question...

Why all the 13in A1s in the IDF?

(Pics cropped to avoid starting one of "those" threads here)

Because 13 is 7 short of 20?

Because they want to honor the US's 13 original colonies?

M-16 is cal .223

Take 223 minus barrel length of 13 = 213

2+1+3 = 6

Star of David has six points

Or 556 - 13 = 543

5 + 4 + 3 = 12

12 Apostles

543_ next in sequence is 2

12 / 2 = 6

6 = star of david

1 + 6 = 7

I believe I read that the reason for the 13" barrel was that it allowed them to cut down A1 barrels to right behind the original gas port, thus shortening the barrel.  I believe they were trying, as best they could, to make 653's out of their old M16's, but 14.5" would not have worked because of the A1's gas port location.  I guess there was enough meat on the barrel to place the FSB back as well, either that, or I'm sure the Israelis got creative, and found a way to make it work.

Unfortunately, I have no documentation for this, I'm going by hearsay based on things I've read on this very board, so take it as you will, but it makes sense to me.

HTH,

ETA: Perhaps this can save this thread from the GD!  I'd like to hear more about it too, as like I said, I have no documentation or confirmation!

Huh?

Those pics are the first I've ever seen of such, and they appear to be of the same rifle; based on the patches showing on the sling.

The cut down A1 seems to be a good possibility.

And oh, BTW, the patches on the sling seem to indicate that the holder of the piece is not IDF, but Border Patrol. If so, he's probably an Arab (Druse or Christian) They make up the bulk of the Border police.

They are not the same rifle. Look at the retro link camo_ken provided, there are alot of odd-ball chop jobs in it.

Also, If they were cut down there would not be a taper on the barrel for the FH. The pics are hard to see.

Randall modifies his cut-down barrels in a way to 'support' the FH - so they could have done the same thing to get that flare. I can see the IDF chopping barrels that had poor specs/erosion at the crown but still had a usable throat and usable barrel. It seems like the most logical explanation to me...or maybe they just figured 13 was bad luck to their enemies? Regardless, I like the look of the 13" carbines a lot. I know, I know - now someone is going to bring up velocity...

13" is 35 percent off of 20 inches.

I have to be careful here...so I will.

A former girlfriend of mine, who is Jewish, said "I'm Jewish!  won't buy anything unless it's 35 percent off!"   She had quite a sense of humor about it.   She knew more Jewish jokes than I even knew existed.

You got it all wrong. You see Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major aef.com thread, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense!

I don't think the IDF cares about velocity differences of 200ft. Its all urban with those shorties anyway. I would love a 13 but will settle for a 16. Not worth 200 for cool factor to me.
