Hey guys i thought there was a tacked thread with this info but I can't find it.

I have a stripped lower and will probably finish it off with a kit from Delton. i'm having a hard time deciding between a 16 or 20 inch barrel. I know that the 16" will lose velocity, but I'm not sure how much this will matter. In the few years I have been shooting I have never shot past 100yds...

With the cost of ammunition now I will not be blasting away with this rifle...everyone once in a while I will shoot it but mostly it will be around_just in case.

In my situation what barrel length would yall recommend? I figure lots of .mil and leo guys use <16" and its plenty, but the extra 4 " might add enough velocity etc to make the extra length worth it.

Also...I know this question has been asked a million times but I still can't decide on whether or not I need to spend the extra cash to get a chrome lined barrel. I know match barrels are not chrome lined to save accuracy....but I'm not shooting for MOA accuracy.

In all likelihood I will be using a bore snake to clean the barrel...will chrome lining even make a difference in this case? Have to run the bore snake through 2-3 times instead of once?

Thanks guys....sorry because I know I'm kinda over this......

Any reason for me NOT to go with 1/9 twist barrel?

Yeah 16" is fine for a 100 yards, 1/9" twist is good for most general rounds, but if you want to shoot heavier ammo then 1/7" is the way to go. Chrome lining prolongs the barrel life and prevents rust which is nice to have, but you can live without it.

I would go with the 16", but you will probably have to have both to satisfy your curiosity. I would get the chrome lined barrel if you plan on just using a bore snake for cleaning. My.02.

I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'm trying to save where ever I can...But I don't want to sacrifice too much quality. The non chrome lined barrels just require more attention?

Also what does Chrome Molly mean

16" vs 20", the 16" will lose only about 200-250 fps as compared to 20".

It is still effective and accurate way past 300 yds, only the trajectory will be slightly different due to the slower velocity.

IF YOU AREN'T TOO CONCERNED WITH ACCURACY PAST 100 yds then go with the 16" and
chrome lined for durability

When yall say that heavier ammo does better with 1/9 what are we talking? match stuff in the seventies? I have about 400rnds of 62gr m855 how does that do in 1/9?

More like 100-120fps. 25-30fps/inch on 16-20"barrels. drops to 10-20 fps/inch with longer barrels.

To the OP, If you're shooting at 100yds you don't need to shoot 75, 77 or 80 gr bullets, you have to seat those so deep in the case they become inaccurate and accuracy in wind would be the only reason to shoot them anyway so you're defeating the purpose. Try 69gr SMKs if it's windy.
Nosler 55gr ballistic tips can be very accurate. load them with 25gr H4895.
The 62 gr bullets are a little off balance so they are not the most accurate thing out there but they will shoot out of a 9 twist.
Are you building or buying? If building look at White Oak armament they have good SS 7 twist DCM barrels for about $200. These are different(much better) than what you would get from RRA or almost any other distributor.

Edit- my mistake it's a 7 twist but will still be a world apart from those $167 barrels from Del-ton

Thanks constructor I'll try it out. Im building, but on a budget. I have a stripped lower so might end up buying a kit.

for 5.56, 16" will be fine--go w/ the one that suits you and your needs (in this case, from what you have said, 16" will be just fine)

1-9 will be fine

i'd opt for the $50 upgrade for CL, since, imo its a relatively small investment for very little drawback...but YMMV

this might help also:

I like the 20" my self.  I think they look the part and if you ever do any longer distance shooting, the extra barrel length comes in handy.
