I have to make some room in my safe, so I was planning to put my unfired Colt Sporter into long term storage... How should I get the rifle ready ? I was thinking of just cleaning her and giving her a good coat of CLP ? I was going to put her in a locking plastic foam case ? I'm I missing anything ??? She'll probably be away for alittle over 1 year.

Thanks,

Yes I would put a heavy coat of CLP on the rifle and bore but I would probably not put in a sealed plastic case because it holds in moisture. Unless you put in a silica packet in with it.

Foam bad, don't leave your gun in a foam case unless you want rust.  I'd give it a good coat with something that protects well against rust like Eezox or clp, then put it in something made for gun storage like a bore store rifle sock and leave it in a dry place that has a relatively constant temperature.

Thorough spraydown with LPS-3, then wrap it in VCI paper.

Probably overkill for just a year's storage, but then you feel like you're unwrapping a really stinky, sticky Christmas present when you go to use it.

don't use foam

use CLP or CLP collector (better)

Yeah, the foam box will definitely hold moisture, expecially if the room changes temperature. Got to use a silica pack.

With extended uninterrupted contact with foam, the foam can break down.  I'd at least use some sort of "breathable" sock between the gun and the foam.

If it was really gonna be long term... then I'd personally use a heavier oil than CLP.

The heavy grease can't be beat for preventing rust long term.

+1 Thin oils like Rem-oil and CLP are shit for long term storage.  Since it's just for a year, wipe everything down with Mil-Comm TW25B grease, including all exterior parkerized surfaces of the barrel, FH and FSB.  The aluminum receivers should be fine.

US Army Marine Corp just bought a ton of those impregnated bags to long-term-store their rifles
(those that they long term store, that is)

Saw it in the SAR magazine.

I'm off to Google

Found them ----> Z-Corr storage bags

and it was the Marines (sorry, Army guy)

Polygun bags are great too . I have some C&R rifles stored in them for over 5 years with no rust.

+1 on the poly bag.  Lube, silica gel packs and heat sealed with something like this:

Thanks for reminding me my favorite shotgun was not in the safe but in a foam case, its free now in a locked closet.
