'bout to have a fit to share my new find, so you guys are the "victim".
I picked up an unfired Colt Sporter, model 6601,HBAR today in it's original box. It's my first Colt. Only had Bushmasters up til now. It's a 20" A2 with A2 FH and no bayo lug.
The serial # is MH 0410XX. Can anyone here give me an approximate birth year for her?
Yeah, I know I'm supposed to have pictures, but I don't as yet, and you all know what the thing looks like anyway.
Thanks in advance for the birthdate.

My reference states that your model superseded the AR-15A2 HBAR whose sales to civilians was stopped in 1990. The first S/N for your model was MH001001 and presumably hit the street in 1990.  The last S/N for your model was MH086025 produced before the 1994 AWB. Your S/N is near the middle of that range so maybe 1992 ???.

There should be a date stamp on the barrel, under the handguards near the receiver which would tell you when the barrel was made.  The format would be mm/yy.

That being said, call Colt C/S at 1-800-962 COLT for the right answer.

Thanks skipsan. I didn't realize until I was looking at some of my own material and then hearing from you , that the rifle was pre-ban. Anything stand out on this model that would make it less than desireable?  I REALLY like it.

The front pivot screw sucks, other then that you can't buy a better AR rifle. It'll run for many MANY years with just a bit of TLC.

My reference states that your rifle has a chromed bore which is a +, and was one of the first models with the larger trigger pins which is sort of a non-issue unless you're changing triggers and buy the wrong size.  The fact that it is "pre-ban" is a + if you wanted to sell it to someone who lived in one of those enlightened States that didn't recognize the demise of the AWB, and only allow pre-ban or ban weapons. Be sure and keep the box and associated manuals, etc. Just having the box in some cases represents about 10% of the resale price when that time comes. Sounds like a nice piece.

I have one of those, and it's my only AR.  I'v had it since '92 and it has never failed me, not even once.

Mark.
