Since I already have a 20inch AR with a 4X optics and 1MOA accuracy, I am interested in completing a second lower as a lightweight (primarily iron sighted) carbine. Can anyone here speak to the accuracy of the 16inch pencil barrels, and how heat affects them. I would be satisfied with sub 2MOA as long as the groups do no open up with heat. Is this realistic from the light barrels? Also, is a light free float carbine rail system worth the added weight and expense for a non-bullseye rifle? I will set the gun on a grip-pod from time to time, and have been known to use a shooting sling. My 20 inch is free floated and I attach both the sling and grip-pod to the rail. Without a FF rail, would this type of stress on the light barrel affect the POI much? Thanks |

I put a 3-9x on my CMMG 16" lightweight, 1-7" chrom lined middy and shot a few groups with it. With 77gr Black Hills it easily shot 1" at 100 yards. I shot about a 10, five shot groups and they didn't change point of impact noticeably or increase in size. Fifty shots doesn't really get the barrel 'hot', like smoking hot, if your thinking about POI changing after a couple of hundred rounds. This upper has standard handguards and is mounted on a lower with a stock (heavy) trigger so I was happy with the groups. I put the irons back on it and have shot it ever since, comfortable that it would shoot where I pointed. Yesterday I managed some solid hits on some 200-250yd steel targets at a 3-Gun match with Wolf 55gr. Good enough. |

A pencil barrel will shhot 2moa with the right ammo and with the right person on the trigger. As far as free float rails I say save the money if all you want to do is put a grip pod on it then use one of the bolt on rail kits for the 6:00 position. Many outfitters have them. I don't think rails are worth the extra weight unless you want to mount a scope, or laser to them, for just lights, bipods, and VFG the rail add ons are lighter, cheaper and good enough. It won't need to hold zero so why pay for something that will hold zero. Also its not worth the weight on a rifle thats goal is to be under 8 LBS (my def of a light weigt is 6.5-8 lbs) Good luck hope it works out OK |

My wife wants a super light AR. My intent is to make a 14.7" light weight barreled, light weight rail system, light weight everything. Then she wants it pink with stainless/chrome details. I'm going for less than 6 lbs on this one. Wish me luck, and good luck to you too. |
