Hi....
I just read an article in G&A about some custom built AR's....nice looking pieces from Gun Creations....anyways, the author mentions to stay clear of the charging handle on 2 models....a .300 and the .450. He stated that he has been hit in the upper lip a couple of times from these. I have 2, .223's that I have built and have put maybe a total of 2000 rounds thru them and I don't think my charging handles have ever done anything except sit there during firing. Am I wrong or does the bigger ammos have the ability to throw the charging handle back? (or have I just been lucky and never got tagged by one of my own guns? Thanks for any explanations.

I didn't read the article, but I'm going to assume what he meant was that his face was too close to the receiver and under recoil the entire rifle came back allowing the closed charging handle to hit him in the lip

The charging handle will NOT fly back with the bolt because it actually seats in front of the bolt carrier group.

eta - As noted, I suspect the "nose-to-the-charging handle" method of firing an AR is abit rough on the lip with the big-bore ARs - and nope I wouldn't want to try it.....

Thanks for the replys.....I thought my CH was locked during firing, but not ever having fired one of those big dogs, I thought maybe the action was differant on them. h!I once saw a guy put his eye way too close to the scope on a Ruger M77 30.06 and it cut a nice half moon right below his eye! hock.gif

As posted it won't fly back with the bolt but if it has a weak spring on the latch or the latch is worn, it can hit you from inertia- won't do damage but its annoying.
