I picked up a Colt AR-15 from a retired detective I know recently. Whenever a local AR expert (self proclaimed) looked at the rifle he told me it was not original. Then he told me I should sell it to him. The rifle was once a law enforcement rifle for a PD out of state. It is marked "COLT 223" on the upper receiver. The lower receiver is marked "SPORTER" with "TARGET MODEL" below that and "CAL. 223" underneath. The barrel is stamped "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR" in front of the sight and is a full heavy barrel that is heavier under the handguard than in front. There is no bayonet lug. Can somebody please tell me what I have? What does the "C MP" on the barrel designate? Thanks for any help you can give. |

"C" stands for Colt made barrel "MP" stands for magnetic partical testing which is pretty standard for Colt barrels While no expert on Colts - it appears to me that you got a real one.... mike eta - lots of info on Colts under the Retro forum and here at www.biggerhammer.net (albeit somewhat dated - chk the AR15 - Barrel section for a list of Colt barrel markings and search the model chart tucked away there under the upper sec. IIRC to find your Sporter, no bayo model) |
Ekie is probably correct that the piece didn't exit the factory the way it is now but hey, it's all Colt; and if you're happy w/it, that's all that counts. I suspect your "expert" is trying to score himsrlf a rifle at a bargain price. |

Ekie's answer is definitive. Colt only stamped "Colt .223" or "7.62X39" on the side of upper receivers sold as conversion kits in order to differentiate them. They did not sell complete rifles with those markings on the upper receiver. The upper on the OP's rifle is not factory original. |
