The little bump (Someone please correct my terminology) right behind the ejection port seems to be getting scratched after only 40 rounds .. I see the pictures on here of people's AR's and they don't seem to be scratched up at all .. Is this normal??

Thanks for the help!

Brass kisses, and completely normal. They'll clean off.

The brass deflector?

It's doing what it's supposed to.

You can minimize or eliminate the brass marks by putting a heavy duty extractor spring in your rifle. That will change the ejection angle just enough that you'll either get no hitting on the hump, or just a tiny bit right at the very tip of the hump.

Just wait until it starts to wear the anodizing off of the deflector and edge of the ejection port.

Most around here already know that the brass marks will clean right off using CLP.

You could lube it up a little bit with some heavy oil, that should do it.

A piece of black electrical tape works too.

It means you are shooting it and everything is working correctly. It's the poor mans gold plating. [poor cause you're shooting $$$ ammo.]

+100  The brass is getting flung out at an angle that makes it hit the brass deflector (the wedge-shaped gadget between the ejection port and the FA boss).  Since it's brass, a fairly soft metal, it rubs a little of itself off on the finish of the deflector.  After a while, the edge of the deflector will start to erode, WHICH IS COMPLETELY NORMAL, and you'll get a shiny spot there.  I tone it down now and then with a Magic Marker, but it won't really hurt the rifle, so don't worry about it.

The reason you see so many AR's on this board which do not have any marks on the deflector plate, is because no one shoots their AR's.  We just take pictures of our configurations but are afraid to shoot them since it will depleat our ammo supply.

Well, that and we don't want to get those brass marks on our deflectors!

I shoot the hell out of my AR's. My Colt has much more anodizing removed on the case deflector than my Bushmaster. Don't know why. Different ammo also ejects differently. Hot mil surplus ammo really flies, while the Wolf just bumps out evenly back and to the right.

No electrical tape or velcro for me.
