Hey guys I'm pretty new to the ar world right now. I've been to this forum before and this is the place I usually go to for research. I have a noob question and I know this is up for debate but I was wondering which rail system should I get. By that I mean should i get a free floating or a non-free floating. I was wondering are there major differences and are there major advantages to having a free floating? Also I was wondering if you have a free floating will it get dirty quicker or have problems more frequently because of the open part in the front which exposes the gas tube?

try a search, lots of topics on rails and FF tubes...

check out this FAQ:  www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=12&t=172238

basically, if you are looking for max accuracy potential, get the FF--h/w, it will not provide a huge amt of diff at most times, but it can help and imo, its only necessary for actual accuracy dedicated rigs...

other than that, just get std railed HGs for regular use

some FF tubes have front covers to keep stuff out; FWIW: most tubes/railed HGs have holes cut out all over the place, so outside dirt will get its way in if it wants to...

Re FF vs non-FF, it really depends how you shoot.

If you use a bipod and lean hard into it, brace hard against rests (fences, etc) or anything else that puts stress on the fore-end then an FF will make a difference as you'll get less barrel deflection.

As regards cleaning, if you take your rifle out where it can get dirty or muddy regularly then look at the 2-part FF rails like the Troy - you can whip the bottom rail off for cleaning.

Another vote for the Troy! Great rails, very robust and I especially like the fact that they're so easy to install and they provide a uninterrupted continuation of the picatinny rail with your flattop upper.

Both of these are easy to install free floating.

I have the CASV-EL installed now and like it. If you want to put hand rail guards on it then it gets a little fat, but without the rail guards it is a comfortable grip. I also have a VFG mounted.

The Daniel is new on the market. I'll install it when I get tired of the CASV look...or if I get a second AR

Having an opening in the front has ZERO effect on how dirty your barrel gets.  Covering the front of the rail would reduce airflow and thus cooling and is a foolish idea.  Dont worry about covering the front of the rail of a FF unit... the only way it should be covered is if the rail you use is retaining the front cap and entire delta rig assembly to ease installation for those that dont want to pull their front sight base.

I have a Surefire rail system.  Have there been any known problems with them?  Honestly, I'm curious.  Just because I laid down a chunk of change for something means that I'm married to it.  If there is something wrong, I'd really like to know.

**Edited to add**  My rail system is the M85 Surefire Picatinny rail forend.

I agree, It looks like it attaches just like the Troy. I would either buy MI or Troy, all the others are to expensive for a rifle thats just for playing dress up, and plinking with.
