Help....I plan to buy or build my 11yr olds first AR for Christmas. I have only owned RRA and DSC and don't know a lot about Bushmaster specs. He wants to be different (typical kid) and wants a Bushy. Nothing wrong with that, I just need recommendations for a 16" lightweight tactical version. Not interested in the Carbons. Thanks in advance.

I think that the patrolmans carbine is a pretty good carbine, I would look into CMMG, they make a great light weight carbine.

Bushmaster makes a great Superlight 16".

CMMG is excellent as well. If you went with CMMG you could get a 14.5 lightweight with Pinned Flash Hider and the choice of either Carbine or Middy length gas systems.

With either company go Flat top "A3" or A1 upper, avoid the A2s. If I were you I would personally would get the A1 and teach him well with the irons.

If I were to choose between the two I'd go CMMG...

Nathan

ETA: CMMG will have the most Barrel Options and configurations.

Bushmaster makes great stripped lowers.  If I cant get a LMT I use a Bushy for my builds

I would not buy a complete bushy given their history of misaligned Front Sight Bases and non staked Bolt Carriers

if he is going to shoot from the bench like my son, you may want to go with a little heavier profile on the barrel. the superlight barrels may give the impression that the rifle kicks a little more. I notice a little difference between my HBAR middy and my lightweight carbine. If he will be standing up and shooting, then the lightweights are the best option.
My son didn't care for the AR15, but he didn't put the stock agains his shoulder and i think the recoil would slam it into his shoulder.
I would go flattop with a carry handle or some other iron sights like the LMT A2 style sight.

I plan to go with an A3 flattop and BUIS. Iron sights are not a problem for him. He has been shooting competitive at the local range for about 2yrs with a tricked out Ruger 10-22 (Volquartsen bbl, jewell trigger, Boyd's Evolution stock) and has recently moved up to a Tika T3 Super Varmint .22-250 and plans to shoot BR this spring.

From what I am hearing I might be better off with a Bushy lower and using a RRA or DSC upper, both of which I am familiar with.

Anyone know where good deals are on Bushy lowers, and is it best to use their lower kits or parts that I have laying around. I may have an RRA 2-stage hidden somewhere.

Why not get one of the CMMG "Bargain Bin" rifles for a starter. Let him get his feet wet and familiar with the AR platform, they you build a rifle together.

Sounds like a good Father /Son project. Plus he gets the gratification of building it himself.

I have a Bushmaster Superlight flattop and it's by far the lightest and the easiest rifle to carry I've ever owned. I put a 9mm buffer in it and it recoils like a pellet gun. I have shot it with the standard carbine buffer and it doesn't recoil any more than my 14.5 M4. If the SHTF and I had to go mobile the supperlight Bushy would be the first one I'd grab. I think there perfect for young shooters. I bought my oldest boy one for his Birthday.
