I'm not well known around here so I'll remind everyone that I am an AR newcomer but I'm geting there!

Last night I ordered two of the Armalite complete uppers for $250 but found out today that only one of them will be shipped and the other will be back ordered. Since these are 16" uppers with carbine gas systems, I am seriously thinking about keeping the one upper and cancelling the back order since, from what I've read lately, a mid-length 16" is ideal.

If it's simply a matter of moving the FSB and using a mid length gas tube, I'll probably keep it and do the modification. If it's more involved, or cannot be done, I will cancel the backorder.

And yes, it's one of the 'ugly ass 16" with 203 step"' uppers for those haters out there

Thanks

There's that pesky hole in the barrel that you would have to deal with.

Don't worry, I had the same thought today, but then remembered it can't be done.

THe only way to "convert" is to get a new barrel, block and guards.  Might as well get a whole upper then.

Not doable (not practical anyways). The hole in the barrel for the carbine gas system is the problem.

it can be done, but it would require a new mid length bbl. and gas tube for the upper.  You could not simply move the FSB forward, as you would have an open hole in the bbl. that would vent gas.  If you want a mid length system, you will at least need a new bbl. and gas tube.

Shit, I completely forgot about the gas hole! how silly of me, I knew I was forgetting something. Oh well, I'll cancel the second order and keep the first one.

Are there any surefire ways to keep a 16" carbine system running properly?

Don't cancel it.  Sell it on the EE.  You can make a little profit and give someone else a good deal since Armalite  stopped taking orders.

Oh, and the best way to keep a 16" carbine system running is to shoot it and clean it once in a while.

Ha, they took the link down but forgot the page!!!

Maybe you should order one and see if it goes thru.

ETA:  I see you have to call in the order.  They will probably tell you the sale is over.

I love this site.  They had 18 uppers to liquidate.  They probably got hundreds of orders.

Armalite was selling them on their site for $255 shipped. They were overrun from a batch they did for the Illinois State Police.

I guess 'complete' is a little misleading. They are complete except for BCG and CH. but I think it was still a pretty sweet deal.

They only had 18 of them but since they got so many orders in, they are putting together more to honor the sales they received.

When did they stop taking them?  I was going to order one in morning.
Sorry for the temp. hijack.

Haha so basically don't use it often.

A carbine system will run fine. I have had at least one in my collection for over 20 years now and it works as it should. I do like my mid lengths better but have no issues with my carbine length upper.
I rarely clean my rifles. Grantes, they all don't get as many rounds through them as my favorites but the carbine has over 1000 rds through it without cleaning. I just squirt a little CLP in it before shooting since it is stored in AZ and I only shoot it when I go down there a couple times a year but I don't clean it. I also shoot a lot of wolf ammo through it and ti keeps going.

So while the mid length is the flavor of the month now your new carbine length upper if assembled correctly with quality parts will work fine.

Thanks, Chuck.

From what I hear, the Armalite uppers are pretty good quality and price was right so why not.

I ordered a Young Chrome BCG for it as well and will be mating to a new lower I built with quality parts.
