I am just getting into shooting. I've done it every now and then but since I'm turning 18 I'm going to buy a rifle.
I was thinking an AR15 A2. I'm in Delayed Entry until I graduate and leave for the Marine Corps in about 6 months and I want to score expert on the range in hopes of becoming a scout/sniper. I thought learning the rifle might help. Does the M16 you recieve at boot camp have a 20" barrel? Is my best bet to buy it in person? Or maybe get it cheaper online with a place such as gonbroker.com?
I live in Missouri, what types of license do I need to begin?

Thanks a  lot

Welcome.

First off don't worry too much about the rifle.  You will be good to go after you graduate basic.

Paris Island will be fun.

In regards to the M16A2 it is a 20 in barrel.  Now we use the M16A4 which is a flat top 20" barrel with rails and Rifle Combat Optic.

I suggest you work on your PT and your knowledge pack you got from your recuiters.

If you want to get a rifle then pick one up on the equipment exhange here.  You don't need a license but I would check with your hometown forum to be sure.

Thanks. The A4 is basically a modified A2 correct? My recruiter said to hold off on the rifle because its easy to build bad habbits BUT if I wanted it he would help me out.

I do know my basic knowledge and finaly scored a first class IST.

Are you a Marine?

For the love of god listen to your recruiter and DON’T learn to shoot from him!!!!!!! He has other things that he is busy with and might be teaching you some of his bad habits! I am a CMT (Combat Marksmanship Trainer) that has to break bad habits every week! If you really want to shoot Expert then listen to your CMT when you get to the rifle range. Trust me you will learn what you need to know about shooting to get that qualification. Work on you PT and basic Marine Corps knowledge. If you think you have all that then do it again.

When are you coming to the island?

I agree here. Learn your PT and concentrate on that and getting in shape.
Rifle marksmanship will come by way of training and endless hours of "snapping in".
Don't waste your time or screw the pooch while "snapping-in",it is very very important.
Body positions and flexability and breathing are super important during this phase.
They will teach you sight picture and sight alignment and all you need to know.
You could always tell who used this time to rest when it came range time.
So study your general orders inside and out, and your USMC history and Semper Fi.

Welcome!

With your positive attitude you will do great!  Makes me want to go with you but I don't think 60 year old guys are in much need these days.

Okay. I'll keep polishing up on those. Do you think its best to hold off completely? Or maybe just shoot with other type of weapons? Really it just is something I enjoy.
Right now I'm waiting to find out. I live in Missouri so normaly I would go to San Diego for basic but both my grandfathers are retired Marines and trained at Paris Island so my recruiter said it's possible I can go there by request because of tradition.
Thanks for the help and your service.

I went to San Diego and have worked at PI, go to San Diego! PI is the arm pit of hell!!!! But if you want to keep up tradition than do your thing. As far as shooting goes go shoot and have fun but listen to your CMT/PMI. Whats you MOS going to be? Good luck!

First of all (puts on flame suit) if you ain't Airborne, you ain't.......

Concentrate on PT, especially running.  Life will be much easier if you quickly get a rep for being squared away and in shape.  Life will become unpleasant if you start falling out of runs, can't do the O-course, etc.

Don't worry about shooting.  You will be taught the right way to do it by experts if you have some patience.  It is much easier to learn to do it the right way  the first time around than it is to unlearn bad habits.

If you have a choice go to San Diego.  Training in the SE really, truly sucks from May-October.  I've lived here my whole life and it still kicks my a$$ in the summer.  I always preferred the dry heat of the desert to the Carolinas.

Good luck and be careful in your career with the Department of the Navy

Everyone is telling me to go to San Diego. I'm trying to decide. I just want to go asap so requesting Paris Island might take longer.
I'm picking infantry for my MOS so that I can apply for scout/sniper training.
Thanks again

Thanks. I have been running. I've been training with a V-max vest and have finaly got my miles under 7 minutes. From what everyone says it seems it might be best for me to wait and focus on some of the things I can improve on without their training. Thanks again. I'll be careful with my career in the MARINES.

All I'm saying is look at who signs your paycheck

Seriously, got nothing but respect for Marines.  Most of ya'll are too smart to jump from perfectly good airplanes.  Much smarter to ride a boat into shore.  Unfortunately I get sea-sick, but not air-sick.

I must say jumping out of planes intrigues me but so does Marines Corps infantry. :-D My Aunt is trying to get me to join the Air Force to be a PJ but to me there is nothing better than the Marines. Everyone plays their part.
