Hi everyone, I’m a new member who is much impressed by your forum. I’m mostly a pistoleer but have been recently bitten by the AR bug, partially because I’ve always been intrigued by the 6.8 SPC ctg. Knowing very little about AR’s, I need all the help I can get.

I’m thinking about a 16” RRA, A4 in 6.8 SPC and would probably be fitting it with some sort of optical sight, although I have no idea what at the present time. I’m drawn to RRA because I’ve had a very positive experience with their 1911’s and the price seems right. I’ve done some searches on the subject but still have several questions, most of them simple minded, that I would appreciate answers to.

1. Ammo is a potential problem with the 6.8 mm. Being an avid reloader I plan to roll my own until something more economical in commercial ammo comes along, but doing so assumes that one can find his expended brass. Does an AR throw them to the far end of firing line like an AK?

2. I’ve heard rumors that Wolf may be gearing up to offer 6.8 mm, any truth to this?

3. Does an AR lock the action open on the last round? If not, how do you know when it’s dry? How do you lock it open for cleaning?

4. The A2 sight looks like it may get in the field of view of an optical sight, if this is the case can it be easily removed?

5. What is the availability of a stock 16” RRA, A4 in 6.8 mm? I assume there is a waiting period.

6. Can the flash hider be easily removed or is it permanently attached?

7. Are Picatinney rails universal? That is, are they all dimensionally the same or are there different sizes, styles?

8. Any guidance that could be provided for an optical sight would be appreciated. I have a feeling there are some fundamental things I don’t know about AR related optics.

Thanks in advance for any help that you give me fellows.

not really most AR's eject 3 to 6 feet away depending on angle and position you are shooting from.  As far as potential ammo shortage yes there will always be  a threat of that since it is not a military adopted round at the present time, if it happens then no porblems.  As far as the immediate future I do not know of any concerns with 6.8

2. I’ve heard rumors that Wolf may be gearing up to offer 6.8 mm, any truth to this?
The rumors are just that I have seen no advertising for 6.8 from wolf there are always a few calibers they make runs for, however Wolf has a bad reputation on these forums and it does not shoot groups very well it also very dirty.  Rock River recommends not firing Wolf in there rifles.

3. Does an AR lock the action open on the last round? If not, how do you know when it’s dry? How do you lock it open for cleaning?
Yes the AR has a bolt catch that locks back the bolt carrier, when you get enough time behind the trigger you can learn to distinguish exactly when the bolt locks back by felt recoil and sound

4. The A2 sight looks like it may get in the field of view of an optical sight, if this is the case can it be easily removed? Get a flattop AR and don't worry about it you can add BUIS (back up iron sights) if you want or a detachable carry handle, and still have the scope rail on top to mount an optic

They are being made right now you can order thru the factory or one of the dealers.  The factory direct way will cost a little more, wait time is all over with RRA from 3 weeks to 3 months, I recommend Pete at Legal Transfers he does a great job and gives a good price, he is also quite honest about wait time.

6. Can the flash hider be easily removed or is it permanently attached?
Depends on barrel leanth, 14.5 in barrels are permanent, while 16+ inch barrels can have the hider removed and replaced

7. Are Picatinney rails universal? That is, are they all dimensionally the same or are there different sizes, styles? All quality rails will be of the same demisions as will all quality attachments for them

8. Any guidance that could be provided for an optical sight would be appreciated. I have a feeling there are some fundamental things I don’t know about AR related optics.
depends on what the rifle is for and your eye sight, this really is personal preference.  If you want to punch paper at 200+ yards get a scope like for a hunting rifle, or target rifle.  If you want to do CQB style stuff get a red dot, Heck get a flattop and change out optics depending on what the job is for the day thats what I do

SD307, thank you for the very helpful comments. I've heard good things before about Pete at Legal Transfers but I don't know how to contact him. Could you please tell me.
