I'm going to order my first kit to build my very first AR. I'm going to get a varmint kit from J&T. I'm going to get it with the 1 in 8 16", 20" or 22" barrel. I'm torn between which length to get. I would like it to be accurate out to 400 yds. I will be handloading. What would you guys opt for, the 16", 20'' or 22"? I'm leaning towards the 20". Also, J&T has a "tactical Hi-rise" upper option for $10 extra. Should I go with this? What exactly is a hi-rise upper? Does it eliminate the need for extra high rings? Thanks for helping. I'm going to be ordering in about a week or so. |
Congrates! The choises are the fun part
Id go with the 20". I dont know barrel/ballistics vs twist... but I see alot of 20"
Standard flat-top upper with open high rings to allow you to use your BUIS for the brave rascals that get too close..lol

The standard flat-top will give you a lot more options. There are lots of ways to raise optics on a standard upper but you can't lower them on a raised upper. With the raised upper you won't be able to have irons if you later decide you want them. You also won't be able to use optics with integral mounts designed for the AR-15 (ACOGS, Eotech 553, etc) |

since your a rolling your own loads, you'll be able to make the most of a longer barrel. i've not personaly use a 22" so i can't say if you'll gain anything with those extra 2" velocity wise. i do run a 24" Krieger in my varmint rig however, when i shoot this barrel out i'm going to take a hard look at replacing it with a 20". while i can load hot enough to burn a hole in the air over my chrony, my most consistent load is not that much faster than what i can get out of a 20". it could just be this particular barrel,or some other contributing factor, but thats another topic all together. |
