What is the deal with the Wylde chamber? I know its supposed to be somewhere in between the .223 and 5.56 NATO chamber. But I hear different things from different people as to whether you can shoot 5.56 out of a Wylde chamber. And if you can, then why on earth would ANYBODY use a NATO chamber? What is the advantage to a NATO chamber? I am researching possible uppers for a precision build i am working on and a lot of the uppers I want only come in .223 or wylde. I need to be able to shoot M855 out of this thing. Thanks guys, EV |
| You can shoot 5.56nato and 223rem through it with out a problem. In fact, that is what it is designed to do. They are quite accurate and reliable too. Still, it is a compromise between two slightly different chamberings, so it wont be the best of each world. I own one (RRA 20") and it has not given me any problems. |
There is no downside. None. Any down side is imagined or made up. I have two RRA that are 99.9999% reliable (1 failure to eject in 4000 rounds)(it came out of a very dirty chamber and didn't get thrown clear). Both of these rifles are much more accurate than I am and I have shot clover leafs at 100 yds. No reason at all to be confused. The Wylde chamber will cycle very reliably with nato ammo. Most of the rounds I have put through my middy have been M855 ball and not one failure. The single failure to eject was with a .223 V max hornandy round after several hundred dirty M855 Adcom rounds. My predator pursuit has never seen any cheap stuff and has never bobbled one single round. |
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but IMHO the Wyld Chambering with a 1/8 twist is the best "all a round" way to go. This configuration can be ordered on a Noveske barrel. |
| The Wylde was designed as a compromise chamber. The NATO chamber has the slop and long throat that is typically required for designers for military service in multiple environments; the commercial 223 with its short throat proved dangerous in some guns if they used hot NATO ammo. The Wylde turned out to be very accurate and is now a popular chamber in CMP/NRA Service rifles. It is a winner when used in a 20" 1:8 twist barrel for sure. The Wylde is a darn good chamber especially for budget minded folks as it allows mass production; there are many still out there who demand minimum spec, custom cut, matchgrade chambers, but the Wylde in a quality barrel with 1:8 twist will out shoot most of us. |
| I don't know all the specs either, but I've just purchased a White Oak Armament SPR barrel with a 1/7 twist and Wylde chamber. I'm going to be launching 75 or 77 gr. projectiles with it primarily. I had a RRA DCM rifle a while ago that also had the Wylde chamber and it was always 100%. MJD |
I have this exact same set up on a LaRue Upper. Any little screw up on my part and it really reflects down range. It so accurate that I doubt I will ever be able, with my skills, to reach this weapons full potential. |
