I am thinking of building a XM177 type AR and saw that Model 1 sales a XM177 kit. I have never used thier parts kits and was wondering what kind of quality they had. ANy other suggestions on the better or cheaper build kit is appreciated.

I've never built a kit gun in my life, from what little I have seen Model1 has rough lower parts kits. Personally I've seen a couple of model one uppers that had problems, though there are people here who like them.

If I was buying a kit gun I'd probably get a J&T. I never really hear complaints about them or Del-Ton. M&A and Model One seem to be more problematic. Stay away from Vulcan or whatever their new name is (it escapes me).

I am assuming you are looking to build on a budget. Otherwise I would say get any stripped lower you like, a CMT lower parts kit (from Dennys' guns or a million other places) a cmt collapsible stock from bravo co and an LMT upper from either bravo or Dennys. A Bravo upper is a bit cheaper and still a good value if they are in stock.

I've built on one of their kits. It was all just as good as DPMSs parts, and the barrel (6,8 SPC) shoots great groups.

I'll use them again.

Their customer service really grabbed my attention.

I'd like to grab a couple of their old hags throats too.

I can only say this: STAY AWAY

I've never had any problems with their stuff. A lot of people on here will complain about them, but I have only had good experiences with them.

Why is it that I've read about a dozen people complaining about their customer service?  Just HOPE that nothing goes wrong with your dealings or the product, or else they'll just shit on you, that's what it sounds like.

Yeah, I know they had some bad customer service in the past but when I have delt with them in the last few years they have always been more than helpful with me.

my first build was on a Model One kit.    Turned out great.  Never had a problem with the gun.   I'd buy from them again.

You will get a dozen people saying that same thing about just about any company you can think of. You have to remember those are one sided stories as well, who knows how they were actually treated or how they initially treated them. It has also been my experience that most of those people saying "dont buy" are saying that from stories they heard, not experienced. (and I said most, not all)

The best AR iv ever fired was built on a M1S upper. People that say bad things need to back up the trash talk with real events. Telling somebody to "stay away" with out a reason is pointless.  I really liked M1S when i ordered. I dont see how those ladys on the phone could be rude.................Bunch of sweet old ladys if you ask me. Hell I called back a day or so after ordering to see if they could get me a tracking number, no problem.

I didnt have to call for a tracking number because my order was to my door in two days.

FWIW I would explore other areas if you want an XM build that is historically accurate, but other than that they make great stuff.

Then I won't ask you.  Sweet old ladies don't act like cunts to sweet young ladies.

Me and my g/f ordered a Model 1 6.8 upper on Monday, 9-25-06. I did the talking to spec it out and then put her on the phone to pay for it. Before I put her on the phone I made sure to ask for the total.

$531 INCLUDING SHIPPING

The next day (Tuesday 9-26-06) she checks her bank statement online and there's a charge for $575 PENDING.

She called Model 1 and they were very rude with her saying that I didn't know what was going on and basically I was being an idiot. It was already "on the UPS truck" and the amount was correct. My g/f told them to go ahead and take it off the truck and cancel her order. She was assured that she would be getting all of her money back.

We went over this and decided Model 1 didn't deserve a damn dime anyway and we'd place an order with CMMG since we were only saving $7 now by going with M1S and CMMG has great people to deal with.

She phoned the bank and they told her it would be fine to place another order with that pending as it was cancelled.

We went ahead and ordered an upper from CMMG and they both showed up as pending.

On Wednesday the Model 1 Sales charge was gone completely (as in it didn't go through) but the CMMG charge still was there, everything seems fine at this point.

Today she checks her account and Model 1 Sales had charged $575 YESTERDAY (Thursday)! Remember this order was cancelled on Tuesday.

There's also a $33 overdraft fee from today (Friday).

She calls Model 1 and they will only refund $557 ($575 - $18 shipping). I still don't know who's ass they pulled this $557 number out of.

The woman once again was very rude with her, upsetting her very much.

So far she's screwed out of the $18 for shipping nothing and the $33 overdraft for their fuck up. $51. Not the end of the world of course, but it's enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Hmmm. for some reason it took me about 4-5 days IIRC. I may have ordered on Fri. Do they ship on weekends? I may have had to wait until monday, if they are out on weekends.

And there it goes.

For some reason the one or two people you get with problems with customer service are usually very passionate about their problem with them. I will leeave the interpritation of that up to you.

My last build was a M1S on a Superior lower and I could not be happier. Fit and finish on the upper was flawless, and after 800 rds. I have never experienced a failure. That's been MY experience, and my next build will also be with them.

I have Model 1 upper...and I like it.  No issues in over 4 years of shooting it.  It has thousand of rounds down the pipe without a malfunction or stoppage.

A guy took a model one upper to blackwater. I was in the class, it didn't last a half a day. I believe that cases were sticking in the barrel. I heard that it worked later with a new barrel installed.

I saw another model one kit gun having similar problems at a buddy's house, again I heard it worked fine once it was rebarrelled.

I bought an upper with a kit from them at a gun show, so I can't speak to their web based operations, but the gun produced is fast becoming one of my favorites. The stock that came with the kit was pretty much the bare minimum of what you could call a collapsible stock, and I didn't use it, nor did I use their trigger.  The rest of the kit, well, I can't tell a premium take down pin detent from whatever, but it all works.

The upper has performed flawlessly so far.  They told me that they're presently moving about 25,000 uppers a year, in most of the popular calibers (mine's a 7.62x39), so I imagine they're a significant blip on the AR market radar.

I'd buy from them again.

I've heard mumblings of M1S oversizing thier gas ports...
I haven't checked mine, but it raises concerns that it will get way overgassed when I start running a suppressor.

When it's time, I will likely sell the barrel and get one that I know for sure is set up right.

I've got a Model 1 sales kit, varmint 20 inch rifle, my first build.  No problems out of it, good service, I ordered the kit on a Saturday, it arrived the following Wednesday.  About 400 rounds through it since building last month, no problems at all.  I'd buy from them again.

TAP 69 grain factory ammo yielded my best 5 shot group off sand bags too date, measuring ~ .35 inch @ 100yds.  One ragged hole in the target.
My gun features stock lower reciever and internals, not sure what I could see with better trigger.  That said, I'm contemplating selling my 20 inch upper, to move to something with a 1/7 twist (my stainless in 1/8), so I can shoot heaviest bullets available.

Their parts are TOP NOTCH. I use them exclusively now for any builds I do. I have three rifles right now, two M&A kits and 1 bushmaster kit. I have used Bushmaster kits, Model 1 kits, and M&A kits, I have owned Colt and RRA. for the quality there isn't many better the M&A parts, for the price there are no better then M&A! If you buy their parts I personally would say that you wont be sorry. + they sell mid length 16" kits where some companies don't. Great service too!

25,000 is the number they gave me.  Of course, everything you hear at a gun show is true.

Nevertheless, they are around, quite a bit. The wide range of uppers that they offer, and apparently actually produce, lends some credence to the idea that they are a relatively high volume manufacturer. But I certainly have no independent verification of their numbers.

That's pretty much irrelevant to me, anyway.  What I've seen so far leads me to feel pretty satisfied with my transaction with them, and I'll certainly consider another.

P.S. - Since they seem to work the shows, maybe you ought to use 7 days a week instead of five.

I built this rifle with an upper, bolt carrier group and barrel from model 1 sales and it shoots sub moa. Last time I shot it was this last weekend with Hornady 75 grn BTHP Match reloads and it shot a 1 MOA group. I was shooting off of a bipod and probably could have done better on my end as usually the 77 grn match king I used to shoot out of it would group about .5 MOA. Groups are ten shot groups. On this particular day the 77 grn opened up to 1.5 MOA but again, I could have done my part alot better.
