I want to convert my carbine into a mid-length, free-floating rig with a smaller gas block that will replace the A2, and be covered by the rails. I think Daniel Defense has some nice rails, but too expensive for me right now, given the fact that I'll have all of this done for me. Any suggestions? Thank you. Bud |
| You may could use the same barrel if someone could plug and weld the old gas port up, and then drill your new one out, and then providing you have enough barrel left, mill it down to fit a gas block, but after doing that you mine as well buy a new barrel because it would probably be cheaper. |
| if you just want to put a mid rail on your carbine and cover the gas block you could do that yourself. if you want to go to a mid gas system you need a new barrel in that case you should just sell yours and buy a mid the way you want it . if you have a standard fsb on your carbine you could cut it down and make it a low profile that would save you a little money also dd makes a real nice gas block that is low profile and covers the taper pin holes if you are removing a stanard fsb. when you decide on a rail system just make sure that the gas block you pick will fit under the rail . i ran into a problem with a clamp vltor block where the clamping screws hit the troy rail and had to get a set screw version.it was a 10" troy rail. you should look at troy or mi rails you could do those your self with out pulling the barrel they both clamp around the barrel nut. they both make 9"& 10" versions which would cover the gas block on a carbine gas system. adco carries troy, bravo co. has troy and mi, both are great to deal with. there is also a thread on how to cut down a fsb just do a search. |
Maybe not. While not a model of clarity, what he said exactly was:
I interpreted this to mean that he wanted to have the gas block covered by a midlength rail. This is not inconsistent with reusing the existing barrel and a low profile gas block (or just a cutdown FSB) under the rail, using the carbine gas system. |
Well I guess bad on me for going with the actual technical terms he used... OP, if you just want the change the gasblock and handguards, you could pick up a clamshell vice block and a barrel wrench and do it yourself. Then you'd have the tools to do more building later on. If you don't want to do that, I'd just send it to Randall at AR15Barrels.com. |
