| I am interested in getting an upper for my Bushmaster XM 15 and would like to get feedback on experiences/opions on 6.8 SPC Vs. 6.5 Grendel. I will be reloading and plan to use the new setup mainly for targets from 100 to 300 yards and a little hunting. |

try a search, lots of topics on the 6.5/6.8, here are a few: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=282708 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=333760 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=328399 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=118&t=324803 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=271627 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=339104 www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=331146 6.5 imo, would be the better overall; 6.8 can work at those ranges though just fine |

6.5Grendel will be your best choice. I have several AR15s, none of which are 6.8SWC (Special Weak Cartridge) I am a fan of .270win but not 6.8spc I do own a Grendel, and I would challenge you to find a round that does everything it can do, and fit in the magazine. |
Are you saying a 6.8 SPC Upper will fit a 5.56 lower andf opperate? I know nothing about 6.8 SPC, only reason Im asking. Ive been thinking of building an SPR upper to go with my carbine... If 6.8 SPC will work that way then Im all over it! |
Funny, I can get 2600fps out of a 130gr .277 and a 18" barrel in my 6.8 can you get that out of a Grendel without breaking the bolt? 2700 from a 120gr over 3000 from a 90gr |
Yes, If you want the best performance use a 1:11" twist barrel and a LMT bolt and carrier. |
Thats no lie! Ive been tree'd by a few hogs, and thats no fun!! 6.8 ought to fair pretty good against them yotee's too

Foreget the hyper of either and let's focus on your requirements last to first. You indicated hunting was desireed, either will do for that. Secondly you want to engage targets out to 300y - either caliber will do that as well. Matter of fact standard loads for either are ballistically similar to 500y Now lets get to what you first you will be reloading. You will find that reloading for the 6.8 is less expensive as the brass is less expensive. At this time there are 3 sources of brass for 6.8: SSA - excellent brass available in bulk ($120/500 from Kotonics) Remmington - good brass available in bulk ($140/500) Hornady - only available after you shoot their rounds 6.5: Lapua - excellent brass $72/100 Alexander Arms - (IIRC it's Lapua but stamped AA) $50/100 From Alexander Arms Wolf - only available after you shoot the rounds Note currently all the 6.5 is imported (thought there is a domestic company comming online with ammo - and possible brass in the near future). Or you can buy 7.62x39 brass and go through the process of fire forming it: at a cost of $130/500 (winchester) Dies? Everybody makes a 6.8 SPC die set (and Lee has a 6.8 FCD as standard production). With Grendel you do have a choice of a few brands, but it's not as varied and prices are generally twice that of the 6.8 (Lee being the exception $39 for a 3 die 6.8 set - $49 for a 6.5G set). Unless you are that 0.5% that actually shoot above 600M regularly, the 6.8 is a more cost effective choice. If you are one of thoe that shoot regulalry above 600M then by all means the 6.5G is what you are looking for. |
For those of you keeping score at home - that 'Major Power Factor' (for those 3-gun matches with major/minor classification). With a 130gr all one needs is 2462fps, so it makes 'Major' by a wide margine - with only an 18" barrel on an AR-15 platform.... |
