I know this topic has been beat to death; however I plan on hunting some florida whitetales with my ar some this season and trying to decide which bullet to load 55 grain rem sp or wichester 64 grain power point. Im really interested in a bullet that will fragment in the dear. The way i look at it im not going to take the same shots I would take with 3006, but wait on perfect shot placement and close range. Suggestions would be most excelent thanks

Go heavy on the projectile, and get one that will penetrate to the animals vitals ~ not fragment out and stop in the outer muscle.

I do a lot of deer hunting and the best round to use is a hollow point.  Some folks get good results with ballistic tips but thats with larger caliber rounds than the 5.56mm.  A good round is Hornady 75gr. Boat Tail Hollow Poit.

I don't support using a .223 for deer.....but people suggest away on loads in the Deer Hunting section of the outdoor community here.

i'd go w/ the 64gr PP

I'd say the 64 gr PP.

People who don't agree with deer hunting with a .223 haven't seen our FL deer. For some reason, we can't grow them much bigger than dogs down here. 150LB is huge.

Federal has a 60gr Nosler Partition load. I don't know how well it'll perform on deer but I suspect it's worth considering.  I do know how well it has performed on some very decently sized 'yotes. The 64gr PP should do it as well. As others have mentioned, i think I'd stay away from HP's od any weight.

I'm no expert but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express...

Go with the 64grain Win.  I loaded up some of those for a cull hunt.  With good bullet placement, you won't be disappointed.

You'll want to stay away from frag bullets.  They explode instantly.  I was going to shoot a small doe in the head from about 200 yards with my .22-250 using 55 gr V-max.  I completely botched the shot and ended up taking right behind the shoulder. (I still can't figure it out to this day what happened)  The deer dropped, but the bullet exploded under the hide.  It did shatter two ribs and rupture the heart.  I was very lucky.  That deer was not very big for Wisconsin.  Probably about 100 lbs.

sounds good I will try the 64 grainers probably being my ar is a 1/9. Im pretty shure the 223 is small but capable of taking down 120 pound dear all day long. Or maybe I just like doing things the hard way and that is why I hunt with a recurve during bow
