Hi,

I bought a M&P 15 last christmas, and I have been a lurker here for a while. Is it better to store an AR-15 with the bolt open or closed for a long period of time? I will be going away to school again, and I can't take my gun Thanks

Bolt open would keep the buffer spring compressed.

Though if you are worried about a closed and locked bolt for long periods of time, simply pull the bolt and carrier out of the rifle for storage.

CLPed, bolt open (sorry, i do that w/ any stored firearm if i can--keeps air moving out more so and peoples can see its not loaded), locked down

As said, will do no harm either way.  Springs compressed since WWII in 45ACP magazines functioned 100% after 60 years and still are rated as strong as when new.  Do it whatever way you choose and , "BE HAPPY".  Moisture and rust are the only things to be avoided with long term storage................Mike

yea, +1 on that--springs wear out from use (compression/release over and over), not from being inactive
