I would like to trade in my Bushmaster A1 upper for an A2 upper. I am a newbie so bare with me but I want to know about approx. how much more $$$ would I have to contribute or if this is even possible?

Don't do that. Trade it in for an A3 upper. So you can add optics later on if you want to. Thats my opinion.

If you ever plan on adding optics get a flat top.

I'd just keep the A1 and buy the other upper or even just swap the barrel and related parts onto a flat top upper. They are $99 just about everywhere and about 20 minutes worth of work for a gunsmith.
