I'm going to buy one of these rifles. The difference is the carry handle. I like the UTE2 because the sights are fixed and will always be stable. From what I understand it's still easy to put optics on it. Anyone know if you can mount an optic and still use the iron sights with the UTE?

The advantage to the Car is it may be  easier to mount optics. However, I don't know if I will even want optics.

get the car, and then some flip up rear sights, they are just as stable.

Get the CAR with dominator rail if you plan on using an eotech. Lemme know if you need more info.

Perfict cowitness.

What mount and optic is that and do you look through the rear sight to see into it?

Go with the CAR A4. I went with the Tactical Entry myself. If you want to use an Eotech for your optics, get it with the Dominator. This will give you a lower 1/3 cowitness. If you are looking to mount an Aimpoint, you can mount it to the Tactical Carry handle with some low profile rings and still get a lower 1/3 cowitness.

I think the exact name of the rings to buy are on the RRA Forum under Industry.

get the regular A3 (flatop) upper...more versitle in the long run

then get a good, durable set of BUISs (Troys, etc)

Were your rear sights good and solid, combat reliable?

Yeah, and I actually took them to combat  ARMS, GG&G, Larue, all the BUIS you are going to get are being used and abused in Iraq right now.  I personally went with a fixed LMT A2 rear sight assembly.  Basically the UTE2 config, but I can take it off if I ever want to do anything different.

If you plan to use an Aimpoint on your new rifle, I have an extra ARMS 22M68 throwlever mount with cantilever spacer for you.  Let me know.  (Turn on your IM too)

Get this one and cut the gay rear sight rail like this:

Then you would have something like the LMT back up iron sight:

The other rifle is only useful if you are REALLY into co-witnessed red dot sights.

I can't believe they sell enough UTEs to people to justfiy having them in their product line.

Back up iron sights that bolt on to an A4 upper are plenty stable and solid.  There is NO need to worry about them loosing zero because they are not a permenant part of the receiver.

The A4 upper gives you plenty more options in the long run.

It's not for me either, but if you absolutly love a cowitnessed red dot, then they are the perfect setup.  Other than that, they are useless.

I bought the Elite CAR UTE2 and used it for a while with an EOtech.  It worked very well. I thought I would be fine not being able to use a magnified scope... but eventually the ACOG bug bit.  I would go flat top from the start if I were you.  Someday you'll get sick of the fixed rear sight.

Agreed but you don't gain anything by having a UTE and you lose a standard spec upper  and the versatility that goes with it.

go with #2, you get both worlds and the option of which one you want.

With #1 you are stuck with the fixed sight only, but then again... if it's going to be a patrol rifle for your department and going in and out of your trunk all the time I'd go with #1 after all, just for the durability of the attached sight, and later on down the road when you want to get something different you can justify buying a second rifle...

Disagree.

Nobody in Iraq has trouble with removable GI carry handles or BUIS.

The mentally of an abused "patrol rifle" is bullshit.  Riding around in a squad car is not combat.

I agree that a patrol rifle does not get near the abuse of a combat rifle. Even my SWAT rifle doesn't get beat up much at all, nothing like our guys overseas put theirs through.

God I'd hope not, it is Iowa.

The UTE might be nice to have a rear sight that's solid and always there in some scenario, but I just am having trouble envisioning it.

Yeah, we're not doing hostage rescue often (although we did two weeks ago) but we do have a lot of high risk drug warrants, and the occasional barricaded subject.

Go with the Std.Car type rifle. Cromelined barrel. Light profile. I would look at the Larue fixed rear BUIS or if you want a good folding rear BUIS the Troy.

I can get the RRA CAR with Chrome Lined barrel, 2-stage trigger, removable carry handle, hogue grip for under 900.00 through my department, why would I go with anything else?

If I go with the CAR should there be any concern about the stability of the non-fixed sights or are they pretty rock solid?

The flip up sights, from the well know and trusted suppliers, are absolutely rock solid.
