Why did Smithenterprise change the style of the vortex? I have and older one with the groove in the end, I see the new ones dont have that groove and dont seem as twisted as the older ones, why did they remove the groove?

The twist was so it would be self tightening.  The ring was useless so they removed it.

What was the ring for??? I have heard of people safety wiring it, but it was put there for a reason and I think its superubertaticool, just what I need for shooting rascally shotgun shells cause I always forget to bring something to put my  targets up with so I end up sitting used SG shells up down range.

I read here, that the groove at the front is for and o-ring, that will keep brush/debris out of the FH if you are sneeking through a forest/jungle????

It was probably for tightening a wire on the prongs to bend them back after they bloomed.

I had one of the older Smith Ent Vortex that I bought 12-15 years ago.  Finally decided to put it on a rifle and found out that the inside was not threaded the whole way.  I called Smith told them what happened and how old it was and he said send it back and we will send you a new updated one.  Thats pretty good service after over 12 years.  I just ordered another from them for my 300.  Great company!
