I think I understand.
A small hole colt will fit a modern lower receiver? A large hole upper will only fit a period corresponding large hole lower receiver?

Correct, with the exception of you can get a universal pin to adapt your big hole upper to a small hole lower, of you could take some tubing and make a shim. If you wanna go the shim route I can measure mine and post the specs for you.
